Guide To Occupational Health And Safety Management For Enterprises

Guide To Occupational Health And Safety Management For Enterprises

Losing employees and their productivity due to sickness, accidental injuries, or even mental disturbances can cause significant problems in the production of business. Occupational injuries or health damages cost a lot to the business, which needs to provide compensations to the affected employees in the form of medical assistance or health insurance claims. It is important to have a prominent health and safety management system that will foster a responsive approach to find and avert workplace hazards or illnesses. An occupational health and safety (OHS) management system ensures the proper collaboration between the employees and the organisation’s management team to identify and assess the risk factors. This collaboration helps to dispense the risks or dissolve any probable risks before they occur.

The establishment of strong and inclusive OHS management is a priority for a business if it wants to safeguard its employees and enhance their wellbeing. This article further explains the OHS management process.

Training the Employees

The first step to protecting your employees from accidental risks or illnesses is training. The more they are aware of possible health and safety hazards, the better they can prevent any harm to themselves. Thus, training and awareness programs are needed to let the employees know what things can happen in their workplace and what they can do to fight against those odds. With the help of specialised occupational health and safety consultants, formulate your training program and coordinate it with the employees. You need to provide repetitive and involved training sessions with practical situations/examples to help employees clearly understand their role in ensuring their safety. Medical Support at Workplace

This is highly necessary to prevent any negligence towards employees when a mishap occurs, physical injuries are encountered, or any health problem is observed. A medical assistance team must be present or close to the workplace where any injured employees can easily receive treatment. Apart from immediate medical support, the medical team should also work to collaborate with the business to conduct regular medical examinations or health screenings of the employees. This is also called general medical surveillance, and it is needed to prevent any occupational illnesses.

Accessing Workplace

Periodic inspections and evaluations of the workplace is necessary to find the potential risks or the hazards that are prevalent. Management needs to classify the hazards as recurring or new ones, and they should identify the trends of the risks, injuries, or sicknesses of the employees, collecting information to investigate their root causes. Proper assessment of workplace hazards and health risks will lead to the introduction of effective hazard prevention programs.Effective Hazard Prevention Plan

A proper hazard control plan with a hierarchy of controls need to be established so that every health hazard encountered or suspected is systematically averted. The most effective hierarchy of controls that will help to prevent workplace hazards is as follows- elimination (physically removing the hazard), substitution (replacing the hazard), engineering controls (isolating employees from the hazard), administrative controls (changing the work structure or process), and PPE (providing employees with personal protective equipment).

Promoting a coherent and responsive health and safety management system is an important need of every organisation to ensure the protection of its employees. Besides preventing loss of productivity to the businesses, it will also lead to workplace morale improvement, increase in turnover (due to fewer sick leaves), savings (due to fewer claims of medical insurance), and a better reputation in the business (due to the safe work environment).

Westboro Baptist Church ordered to pay US$11 million to family of fallen US soldier

Thursday, November 1, 2007

The Westboro Baptist Church has lost a lawsuit and has been ordered by United States District Court: District of Maryland to pay US$11 million to the family of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, a fallen soldier, who was killed while serving in Iraq.

The lawsuit was filed by Snyder’s father, Albert, after the church held a protest across the street from the cemetery where funeral services were being held. The church was sued for, “defamation of character, invasion of privacy–intrusion upon seclusion, invasion of privacy–publicity given to private life, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil conspiracy,” according to court documents obtained by Wikinews.

Wikinews has also learned that the church filed a motion for a mistrial on October 29, but was ultimately denied.

The jury ordered that $2.9 million be awarded to the Snyder family for compensatory damages and $8 million in punitive damages, but reports say that the church cannot afford that amount, with their assets worth under $1 million. The defendants plan to appeal the judgment and have expressed confidence they can get it overturned.

US home sales fall at fastest pace on record

Monday, January 25, 2010

Sales of previously owned homes in the US fell at the fastest rate ever recorded last December, according to data from the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

According to the association, existing home sales fell 16.7% last month, to an annual rate of 5.45 million, the largest crash since 1968. The figure was less than the 5.90 million units, or an eleven percent drop, predicted by most analysts.

Sales of homes went up for the entire of 2009 to 5.156 million units, or 4.9% for the year, and prices dropped from 2008 by 12.4%.

NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun described the figures as being “probably the largest annual drop since the Great Depression”. He said that “the market is going through a period of swings driven by the tax credit. We’re likely to have another surge in the spring. Job creation is the key to a continued recovery in the second half of the year.”

Pierre Ellis, a senior economist for Decision Economics in New York, commented on the figures, saying: “The drop in home sales is the payback for the acceleration of sales that occurred with the original first-time home buyers tax credit. […] There is an issue as to whether the decline represents a fundamental weakening.”

“The housing market continues to face significant headwinds, including high unemployment, record delinquencies and foreclosures, the specter of rising mortgage rates as the Fed’s [mortgage-backed securities] purchase programs comes to a close in late March, and tight credit,” Omair Sharif, an economist for RBS Securities, noted.

“Still, the resale market showed resilience in the second half of 2009, and the expansion and extension of the tax credit to April 30 could boost purchases during the spring selling season,” he said.

“We’ll see a pickup in existing home sales in the next couple of months as people take advantage of the tax-credit extension”, economist Adam York of Wells Fargo Securities LLC in Charlotte, North Carolina claimed. He fore-casted a pace of 5.4 million. He said that there were unlikely to be buyers of homes, despite the fact that the U.S. was “past the bottom.”

All four regions of the country saw a decline in sales. In the Northeast, sales fell 19.5 percent, in the Midwest, they plunged 25.8 percent. The South, the country’s largest region, saw a 16.3% decline, while in the West, sales waned by 4.8%.

US stocks fell slightly after the announcement, but went back up later in the day.

Harvard’s Berkman Center blog group develops blogging tutorials

Sunday, March 27, 2005

A discussion group about weblogs, or blogs for short, that meets at Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society last week began releasing video tutorials about how to blog using various web and software tools.

Harvard University‘s Berkman Center hosts the blogging discussion group, which has met weekly for the past two years.

After months of discussion and collaboration on the new tutorials, at Friday’s evening meeting presenters showed off some of their early video tutorials, which stream recorded audio, and previously-captured video of a computer screen, along with simultaneous live audio from a microphone.

Participants learned how similar tutorials can be constructed using free software tools such as CamStudio. Audio of the session was made available on the World Wide Web.

Shimon Rura, a local software developer, presented a recent screen-capture + voiceover flash file he had made, demonstrating how to use a bookmarklet in the Frassle blogging package. Other participants discussed video demonstrations of how to podcast, and how to use specific blogging tools such as WordPress.

There was also disussion of a recent initiative to set up a Blogging101 site for distributing and translating these instructional materials. Rebecca MacKinnon, a noted blogger and Berkman Fellow, spoke about the BloggerCorps initiative to connect non-profits who want broader exposure with local blogging enthusiasts.

The meeting was held inside the main conference room in the Berkman Center’s Cambridge offices on Massachusetts Avenue.

Why Do Internet Marketers Need Customer Relationship Management Software?

Why Do Internet Marketers Need Customer Relationship Management Software?

By Matthew Bredel

Internet marketers come in all shapes and sizes. There are some marketers who can’t seem to force themselves to stop building and developing relationships with potential customers. Then there are others who seem to have a terrible time breaking the ice and managing to make the contact with customers that is necessary to build long-lasting and loyal relationships. While almost every type of marketer can benefit from CRM software, it is the latter group that needs it most.

Why do you need CRM Software if You’re Marketing Online?

Once upon a time, there was some degree of anonymity involved in marketing via the Internet. That was part of the appeal of it for many marketers. They could take on any personality or personae they desired and build a loyal readership with little more than a gimmick and an avatar.

Times, they are a-changin’!

Today, we live in the age of social media and network building. Internet marketing is no longer a solitary venture. It is filled with joint ventures and Internet marketing partnerships. It’s built on social media networks. Relationships are more important today for Internet marketers than ever before.

The problem is this: the average Internet marketer has the attention span of a squirrel on Ritalin.

You want to build relationships. You like the people you’re working with or trying to work with. You like your customers and appreciate the fact that they trust you enough to pull out their wallets to buy your product. It’s not an intentional breach of propriety that has you missing phone calls, forgetting webinars, or failing to send out important details in emails. It’s that Internet marketing ADHD kicking in once again.

You’ve got about ten thousand irons in the fire. You can even be intending to call, Skype, or meet-up at the appointed hour but get buried in work and don’t even realize the appointed hour has passed until five hours later when you absolutely can’t stand to look at the computer screen for another minutes because your eyes are so dry and tired.

Here’s how CRMs (customer relationship managers) help.

Organization

They keep all the appropriate files, folder, images, documents, and emails together on one location on your computer. You don’t have to worry about sifting through a two gigs worth of documents hoping to find the right one or worry about matching up an image that’s saved in your photo section, an email that’s still sitting in Outlook, and instructions you printed out and haven’t seen in a month of Sundays.

It’s all together for you in one location on your computer (this could be considered time management too with all the time it will save you gathering this information when it’s time to make the call or attend the webinar). Plus all your contact information for the client, JV partner, or team members is right there together with the relevant details.

Time Management

You know by now that time is money in the business of Internet marketing. You don’t need anyone to tell you that. But, how often do you lose track of time and forget to do things that are important for your business?

With the right CRM program you’ll never forget to make a blog post, send out a newsletter, contact a joint venture partner, or even forget your Mother’s birthday again. You can even set things up so that you receive an email or text alert letting you know that there is something important you need to do right now! How cool is that?

In the end, you’ll have more MONEY and TIME on your hands.

Information Access

Ultimately, fast access to information is the real beauty of a competent system for CRM. You’ll have all the information you need to answer questions, provide quotes, give estimates, etc. with the click of a mouse. Even the disorganized mind of the most attention deprived Internet marketer on the planet can enjoy real improvements in income and sanity when using a solid system to manage customer relationships, information, data, and details.

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

Six miners trapped in Utah mine after possible earthquake

Monday, August 6, 2007

At least six miners are trapped approximately 1700 feet underground in a coal mine in Utah after portions of the shaft collapsed. The mine is owned by Utah American Energy and is close to the town of Huntington, Emery County, 160 km south of Salt Lake City.

Robert Murray, The CEO, President, Director and owner of Murray Energy and the owner of Utah American Energy, said during a press conference at 5:00 p.m. (eastern time), an “earthquake caused the collapse at about 3:00 a.m. (mountain time).”

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded what is allegedly a magnitude 3.9 earthquake at 2:48 a.m. (mountain time) on Monday morning 21 km (13 miles) east, southeast of Mount Pleasant, Utah, but the director of the USGS seismology stations Walter Arabasz, says that no earthquake caused the collapse.

Murray states that at least “two mining machines will be brought in to clean out the debris” at the beginning of the collapse and that he will “spare no expense” in rescuing the men.

“We have four rescue teams working to free the trapped miners. We will try four ways to get to the miners which include drilling 1,700 feet from the top of the mountain. We will also drill a hole” in a neighboring mine shaft sealed in 2004 after it was finished being mined that is “about 100 feet from the miners.”

Wedding Gown: The Best Fit For Your Body

Wedding Gown: The Best Fit For Your Body

By Hugh Parker

No matter your size, there is a dress for every body type. When choosing your wedding gown it is important not only to determine what you’ll look best in, but what you’ll feel best in as well. Here’s a handy guide to help get you started.

For Full Figures: Enhancing your assets is key, but so is making sure you’re comfortable when you walk down the aisle. A dress that’s too tight may hug your curves in an unflattering way. And a dress that’s too loose may cause you to look larger than you actually are. It’s best to choose a dress that will provide support and add flattering lines to your shape. If you’ve always dreamed of being Cinderella, this is your chance! A ball wedding gown with a fitted bodice and a full waist will compliment your upper half while concealing some of your more augmented areas underneath. Another tip for heavier hips is to try an empire gown. This dress features a small, scooped bodice with a high waistline and a slightly more slender skirt than the ball gown presents. This dress will buoy your bust while hiding your hips and other problem areas.

For Pear Shapes: If your figure is more of a fruit shape, flaunt it! As with full figured gals, the Cinderella ball wedding gown works wonders for your body also. By taking advantage of your more ample areas, this dress will fit well and flatter you. Or you may want to try the basque silhouette. Worn with or without straps, the bust of this dress is tighter on top and the torso drops down below the waist to form a “V”. The bottom of the wedding dress begins at the “V” and billows slightly outward until it hits the floor. This cut will accent your waistline without creating unsightly lines.

For an Hourglass Figure: Your shapeliness allows for a fun and flirty fit! A dropped waist dress works best for your body. A variety of necklines are available to compliment this look- from halter to bateau and sweetheart to strapless. The bust of the wedding gown is more form fitting and continues through to the bodice, where it ends just below the waist. This elongates your torso, giving you a trim and tall silhouette. The bottom of the dress flows out and can be accented in an A-line look or the material can be draped for a cool, curtain-like outline.

For Tall and/or Slim Builds: Whether you’re of super model stature or you’re particularly petite, there are a number of dress designs that will look dazzling on you. The ball wedding gown works well for your figure, as it does with full figured and pear shapes. But you may also try the mermaid dress. This wedding gown looks spectacular when a v-neckline is incorporated, as it helps accent a small or large bust. The form-fitting bodice continues to the knee, giving you a slender, streamlined look. At the knee, the wedding dress flares out, for a flowy, fin-like finish. The sheath dress is another delightful design for your shape. A tight bust and empire waist compliment the form-fitting bodice at the torso and hips. The dress has a slightly outward flow at the bottom.

Wikinews interviews U.S. Libertarian presidential candidate Wayne Allyn Root

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Wayne Allyn Root, one of the candidates for the Libertarian Party nomination for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

Root is the founder and chairman of Winning Edge International Inc., a sports handicapping company based in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, he is an author and a television producer, as well as an on-screen personality both as host and guest on several talk shows.

Root, a long-time Republican, declared his candidacy for the Libertarian Party on May 4, 2007.

He says he is concerned about the qualities of many who run for president, and fears that they do not know the needs of American citizens. He also says that they cater to big businesses instead of small ones.

He has goals of limiting the federal government and believes that the US went into Iraq for wrong reasons. A strong supporter of the War on Terror, he feels that it was mishandled. He has conservative values and came from a blue collar family in New York. He graduated from Columbia University with fellow presidential hopeful Barack Obama in 1983.

Root believes that America is in trouble and hopes to change that if elected.

Report urges Kenya to ban plastic bags

Wednesday, March 9, 2005File:Plastic bag stock sized.jpg

They are cheap, useful, and very plentiful, and that is exactly the problem, according to researchers. A report issued on Feb. 23 by a cadre of environment and economics researchers suggested that Kenya should ban the common plastic bag that one gets at the checkout counter of grocery stores, and place a levy on other plastic bags, all to combat the country’s environmental problems stemming from the bags’ popularity.
