US Senate passes stimulus package

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

The United States Senate passed a stimulus package worth US$838 billion on Tuesday, aimed at creating millions of new jobs and steering the economy out of the recession. The Democrat-controlled Senate passed the bill by a vote of 61-37, with only three Republicans supporting the plan. The move comes in the midst of a recession, which has claimed 3.6 million jobs in the US.

Before the bill can be signed into law by the president, the Senate package first has to be reconciled with a different version of the plan that was adopted by the House of Representatives. The main differences between the two versions are over spending priorities and how to expand Medicaid, the medicinal program. The Senate version would also give more resources to tax cuts, whereas the House’s plan would devote more money to local governments and schools.

President Barack Obama welcomed the news, calling it a “good start”. “That’s good news and I want to thank all of the members of the Senate who have moved the process forward,” he said, speaking at a town hall meeting in Fort Myers. “We’ve still got to get the House bill and the Senate bill to match up before it gets sent to my desk, so we got a little more work to do over the next couple of days.”

Most Republicans voted against the stimulus package. Shortly before the Senate vote, Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell spoke against the stimulus plan, speaking for most of his Republican colleagues: “This bill misses the mark. It is full of waste; we have no assurance it will create jobs or revive the economy,” he said. “The only thing we know for sure is that it increases our debt and locks in bigger and bigger interest payments every single year.”

The only Republicans who voted for the bill were Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, and Pennsylvania’s Senator Arlen Specter.

Wall Street reacted negatively to the passage of the bill, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down over three hundred points in afternoon trading.

Elvish, Klingon and Na’vi: Constructed languages gain foothold in film

Monday, December 28, 2009

The release of the movie Avatar, written and directed by James Cameron, has generated increased interest in the field of constructed language, also known as conlang. Cameron asked American linguistics professor Paul Frommer to develop a language spoken by the extraterrestrial people in the film known as the Na’vi.

Author J. R. R. Tolkien developed Elvish languages for his literary series The Lord of the Rings. The Elvish language was featured in scenes of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson.

The Klingon language (tlhIngan Hol) was developed by linguist Marc Okrand, initially for use in the 1984 film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Okrand drew inspiration from Klingon lines spoken by actor James Doohan in the film Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Doohan portrayed character Montgomery Scott in the Star Trek series. A dictionary for Klingon developed by Okrand, The Klingon Dictionary sold over 300,000 copies.

You know your alien language has taken off when a German guy translates rap songs into it.

Klingon became quite popular and has developed a usage among Star Trek fans. The Klingon Terran Research Ensemble in the Netherlands created an opera in Klingon. The play Hamlet by William Shakespeare was translated into Klingon. A German Trekkie who goes by the moniker Klenginem posted videos to YouTube where he raps songs he translated into Klingon by musician Eminem. Klenginem has been cited recently in pieces on constructed language in The New York Times, ABC News Nightline, and National Public Radio. “You know your alien language has taken off when a German guy translates rap songs into it,” said National Public Radio of Klenginem.

Linguistics professor Frommer received his PhD degree from the University of Southern California (USC), and subsequently shifted his focus into the business arena. He returned to USC to teach at the Marshall School of Business. Cameron tasked Frommer with creating an entire language for the Na’vi people.

In an interview with Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times, Frommer voiced hope that the language would continue to be used separate from the movie, as Klingon has. “I’m still working and I hope that the language will have a life of its own,” said Frommer. The Na’vi language created by Frommer contains over 1,000 words, as well as a structural system and rules format for usage. Frommer told Vanity Fair that the language was fairly developed, commenting, “It’s got a perfectly consistent sound system, and grammar, orthography, syntax”.

I hope that the language will have a life of its own.

Frommer explained the direction given to him before creating the language, “Cameron wanted something melodious and musical, something that would sound strange and alien but smooth and appealing.” The Avatar writer-director provided Frommer with approximately three dozen words of the Na’vi language he used in his scriptment for the film. “That was the starting point. Probably the most exotic thing I added were ejectives, which are these sorts of popping sounds that are found in different languages from around the world. It’s found in Native American languages and in parts of Africa and in Central Asia, the Caucasus,” explained Frommer. Cameron and Frommer worked together for four years developing the language.

The linguistics professor relied on inspiration provided by Cameron, and avoided drawing upon influences from Elvish, Klingon, and the international auxiliary language Esperanto. Sample words in the Na’vi language include “Uniltìrantokx” (oo-neel-tih-RAHN-tokx), meaning “Avatar”, and “tireaioang” (tee-REH-ah-ee-o-ahng), which means “spirit animal”. Maclean’s reported that fans of Avatar were anxious for more instructive material from professor Frommer about the language in order to learn how to speak it with others that appreciated the film. “The response has been quite remarkable and totally unexpected. I never thought there’d be this level of interest. But I really don’t think of Na’vi as a competitor to Klingon. If it does develop a following, that would be quite wonderful,” said Frommer of the response to the language from Avatar fans.

We wanted to ‘out-Klingon’ Klingon.

The Na’vi language is itself a minor plot point in the film Avatar. The character Jake Sully portrayed by Sam Worthington endeavors to learn the language while living on Pandora. A botanist portrayed by actress Sigourney Weaver instructs a scientist played by actor Joel David Moore on how to become conversational in the language.

Zoe Saldaña, the actress behind warrior princess Neytiri in Avatar, picked up the Na’vi language faster than her fellow cast members. “Zoe owned the language and everyone had to match her, even her accent,” said Cameron. Saldaña remarked that the most difficult part about acting in the film was speaking in English with the accent of the Na’vi people. Cameron touted the rich nature of the Na’vi language in publicity for his film. “We wanted to ‘out-Klingon’ Klingon. The best sci-fi movies immerse the audience in that world until it doesn’t seem alien to them,” said Cameron to USA Today.

Austrian police find dozens dead inside lorry

Thursday, August 27, 2015

Austrian police today found an estimated 20–50 decomposing corpses in an apparently abandoned lorry.

Roadworkers who spotted the vehicle, which had been there since yesterday at least, alerted police. Responding officers found it full of corpses. The lorry is on the so-called “Eastern Motorway”, the A4, close to the Hungarian border. It was on the hard shoulder between Neusiedl and Parndorf, closer to Parndorf.

The victims are thought to have suffocated. Police are seeking the driver. The Krone published an image of a non-articulated food lorry on the hard shoulder, which they report is the vehicle in question. The photo shows a pool of dark liquid on the ground beside the vehicle.

Video from a passing motorist shows at least one helicopter on-scene. The truck, which has pictures of meat on the side, shows branding for Slovakian food firm Hyza. Earlier today the company’s website sported an apparent anti-immigration graphic, which has since been removed.

Wikinews got in touch with Hyza. “We are truly sorry about [the] tragedy” they told us in a statement. They said they have checked GPS trackers on their fleet and all their vehicles remain in Slovakia. The statement says the lorry in question was one of 21 Hyza vehicles sold on last year. It was then sold again and exported to Hungary, where it is now registered. Hyza told us the new owners have not changed the branding on the vehicle. According to the Bild newspaper, Agrofert — the parent company of Hyza — said in a statement the new owners were required to do so.

Hyza says they will “actively cooperate with Slovak police”, and “express [their] sincere condolences to the bereaved families.”

Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner called it “a dark day” and called for European Union-wide measures to protect immigrant refugees and tackle human traffickers. Neighbouring Hungary is constructing a border fence across its entire frontier with Serbia. Yesterday alone saw a record 3,241 attempts to enter Hungary illegally, according to authorities there.

Conflict in Syria and other parts of the world has led refugees to Europe. Once inside, they can move freely inside the Schengen Area, which covers most of the EU.

Austrian police earlier this week arrested three motorists suspected of people smuggling. One driver is accused of moving 34 people, ten of them children, into Austria from Serbia. The group were left by the roadside near Bruck an der Leitha and reported struggling to breathe in the van.

If you are wondering what kind of wheel are right for you Hummer here’s some helpful information on Hummer wheels that will help you better understand the intricacies of picking out the perfect wheels for you Hummer. The factory one piece steel wheels are hub centric, and use the flanged lug nuts. All other wheels are lug centric and use the Acorn lug nuts. What this means is that the one piece factory wheel depends on its fit over the hub for centering and support.

Because of this the hub hole in a one piece wheel is concerning 1/32 inches smaller in diameter than other Hummer wheels. The correct way to measure the width of a wheel is from bead seat to bead seat. Another important factor in wheel maintenance is lug nut torque. New aluminum wheels have some crush value left in them so they should be readjusted at fifty, one hundred, and two hundred miles before you expect that they hold their torque. You should read up and find more information on this and mounting and balancing wheels before you make your final decision.

Understanding Custom Hummer Wheels

In the past vehicle wheels used to be submissive sections of steel with tiers attached. Today, this major element has become a definitive accessory that screams essence and style to your ride. Beyond doubt there’s no other part of a vehicle that can swiftly modify the outward show of the vehicle more rapidly than a set of fine looking wheels.

Attention grabbing wheels can add a little something to even the most dull and lackluster automobile. Wheels come in many different looks and styles so you can pick the wheels and rims that best match your style. Wheels are also available in a variety of sizes and styles. The size of the wheels without a doubt has a lot to do with the nature of performance the wheels will provide. Larger wheel are put in to pull off the rugged muscular look while at the same time supplying improved handling. Big wheels are also designed to battle bumpy environments and to refuse to accept any retribution from off road maneuvering. Smaller wheels, on the other hand, can make your vehicle come out lower to the ground making it specifically styled for receptive street driving.

When it comes to Hummer wheels, the decision can be overwhelming. It can very difficult to find the perfect set of wheels for your Hummer, a set that would be just the thing for your asset. Coming to a decision on the right wheels for your Hummer has a lot more to do with than purely the size of the wheels. Among the other factors that you have to consider when looking for new set of Hummer wheels include the type of job your vehicle is supposed to do. The right Hummer wheels are based on your particular intentions, if your hummer is just a show ride, something to drive around the city on the weekend, or a family ride with an attitude giving you the comfort of safety and the functionality of use. It also makes a big difference whether if your Hummer is rear wheel drive or front wheel drive.

Once you pick out the right Hummer wheels that fit your style, commands and demands, you have done your research so you can now go to an auto part shop to acquire your desired pieces. But if you want aftermarket, custom wheels, available to the general public for very affordable prices, just visit our website, we are an aftermarket wholesale wheel dealer, and we sell aftermarket/custom wheels to the general public for very affordable prices. We have widest array of top quality Hummer wheels in various sizes, styles and specifications. For whatever type of Hummer wheels you need, we have you covered.

The Hummer H1 and the Hummer H2 have the same bolt pattern. Hummer H2 wheels have a smaller hub; they are 17 inchX 8.5″. It is possible to use Hummer H2 wheels on the Hummer H1, but you will have to devise the hub outward 3/32 inches so the wheel will fit on the Hummer H1 tire frame. The load capacity of the Hummer H2 wheel may not be enough for the Hummer H1, therefore, adjustments may have to be made before you get out on the road. Another issue to deal with is that the backset of the Hummer H2 wheel is not the same as the Hummer H1. Two piece steel wheels squeeze in the tire and run flat bead locks between two halves that bolt together with a dozen flanged locknuts. This design allows repairs to be made in the field without unique equipment, tire machine. That is why all the armed forces Hummers have two piece wheels.

While it is feasible to disassemble this wheel in the field it is a very tedious exercise to screw on and off the dozen locknuts with no power tools. The good thing concerning it is that you are capable to tune up the wheels at home if you would like. All the two piece wheels offered by AMG before to the 2000 model year came with five faced wheel nuts that have need of a unique socket to do away with. This was done to lessen AMG’s legal responsibility when these wheels were repaired. If you to do away with the wheel nuts while the tire is full of air the wheel assemblage could blow up. By controlling who was capable to purchase the socket AMG could insure that only trained technicians could service the wheels. It turned out that many owners were capable to obtain or make their own sockets and purchase regular hex flange nuts from the many Army surplus dealers. The most recent two piece wheels which are standard on the 2000 models now come with hex nuts.

The two piece wheels do have need of some preservation. Over time depending on circumstances such as torque and tire pressure the wheel studs can burst and have need of replacement. It is more likely that studs burst on really hot days on the road when the tire pressure increases in the heat up to near 50 PSI levels. Whenever you are on the highway in the heat you should watch the tire pressure and don’t let it rise above 45 PSI. For these reasons it is important to check your wheels at gas stations and rest stops. All you will notice is a wheel nut missing. It is recommended that you carry a few studs and nuts with you on trips. You want to replace a blown stud as soon as possible because it will cause the adjoining studs to carry the load and possibly fail. It is suggested to replace the blown stud and the two adjacent studs. In 2000 AMG came out with a recently fashioned two piece wheel. They are on hand with hex nuts and use an orange / red ring which is thinner than the previous style rings. They also have an opening that you have to to line up when putting back together.

In 1996 AMG came out with their first 16.5 inch aluminum wheel. If you have the chance to take a look at these wheels you will notice that the spokes are very smooth. When AMG first came out with their 17 inch aluminum wheels they had the same smooth spoke patterns. However, all the following 17 inch aluminum Hummer wheels have a spoke with a three dimensional contour and have a hidden CTI.

Twelve bolt two piece steel wheels, with no bead lock/ run flat with GSA’s weighs 110 lbs. In my opinion you should not use a twelve bolt wheel without either a run flat or a bead lock. Unless the tire is inflated to at least 20 PSI the tire can come off the rim. If the tire loses air from a leaking CTI system the tire will roll out and come off the rim. The majority of two piece wheels came from the factory with one piece solid rubber run flats that also security device both tire beads. These each weigh about thirty five lbs each with a total wheel and tire weight of about 142 lbs and require that the inside of the tire be coated with unique grease. It takes a unique run flat removal device and a lot of work to change a tire with this set of connections. In previous models, on the early style Hummers there was a two piece run flat that came out for a short time.

AMG also offers a bead lock which is in the region of 10 lbs lighter and does not have the call for of any unique tools or run flat grease and locks both tire beads. The two piece wheels with bead locks are more preferable for this reason. Having a run flat on a civilian Hummer does not buy you much. It is only in very rare situations that you would not have the chance to merely stop and change a tire. If you are forced to drive on a flat tire you will most likely ruin the tire whether you have run flats or not. If you are driving with seventeen inch wheels you should not lower the tire pressure to a large extent lower than fifteen PSI or the tire will start to hit the run flat. In addition the run flat grease makes it complicated if not unworkable to patch a tire.

Working on Hummer wheels is a serious task and can be dangerous if you are not prepared or don’t know what you are doing. Keep in mind and be conscious that even the best wheels can become bent under extreme conditions. If you notice shaking, verify the balance and equilibrium. The one piece 16.5 inch steel wheels are not as strong as other Hummer wheels. The company that offered AMG with the one piece steel wheels turned out with a lot of flawed wheels. That is why AMG went back to the two piece steel 16.5 inch wheels for the newer Hummer wheel models.

If you decide to go with the one piece Hummer wheels you will probably have two piece run flats installed. There is no need; these run flats are totally worthless because they do not really lock the tire bead. If you ever have the chance to pull your tires off and take out the run flats, throw them as far as you can. If you decide to keep the two piece run flats you will have to get a only one of a kind Kent Moore run flat cam socket to tighten the run flats which can cost you upwards of $500.

The one piece wheels are very easy to tune up once the run flats have been replaced. You can have the tires mounted and balanced at most tire stores with standard tire machines. These one piece wheels are abundant in supply so they cost less than the other wheels and can make for a good spare tire. If you decide to go with the one piece wheel as a spare, make sure you go with the flanged lug nuts. If you already have or are planning to get a tire carrier, make sure that the Hummer wheels you are planning to make use of will fit on the carrier.

There are two types of aluminum wheels, the one piece standard and the two piece forged Hutchinson which comes with either a bead lock or a run flat as an option. The factory aluminum wheels are great because they are light, run true and hide the CTI hardware. The only negative aspect to the aluminum wheels is that they can get sliced up off road. The two piece forged aluminum wheel is the most excellent wheel yet prepared for the Hummer for the reason that they are extremely physically powerful, light weight, and fasten the tire beads. The trouble with these wheels is that they cost well over one thousand dollars each if you buy direct from the factory, without tires. The solution is to put on a set of the Goodyear MTR’s and you will have a good quality arrangement.

In all probability the most popular aftermarket wheel for the Hummer are the Cepeck 8.5 inches by 17 inch aluminum wheels with Hidden CTI. Most likely, this is due to the fact that they have a load rating of forty five hundred lbs and are very strong. These wheels are one of the only aftermarket wheels for the Hummer H1 that has the proper offset. These wheels also come in 18 inch.

The first design of one piece 16.5 inch steel wheels made its appearance in the 1993 model year in the Recruit Series Hummer. This is the only vehicle they were used on. In 1995 the 16.5 inch Goodyear GSA highway touring tire was introduced as an option. And in January of 1996 a new one piece 16.5 inch steel wheel using flanged head lug nuts became the standard OEM wheel until the new century model year.

The twelve bolt two piece 16.5 inch steel wheels with Goodyear MT radial tires have always been available to the general public for the civilian Hummer. The two piece steel wheels were distributed with five sided flange headed wheel and six sided tapered lug nuts. These wheels were used on all non-recruit Hummers for the duration until January of 1996 and the MT tires were a typical apparatus up to the 2001 year.

Nokia appoints Microsoft Business Division Head as chief executive

Sunday, September 12, 2010

The Finnish communications corporation Nokia announced that its Head will change on September 21. The previous chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will continue to chair in non-executive capacity. The head of Microsoft Business division Stephen Elop will take the position. It is the first time a non-Finn becomes Nokia president and chief executive.

The change follows Nokia’s fall in world markets. It includes a decrease in Nokia’s American market share to less than ten percent after failed negotiations with a number of leading American phone providers. An analyst at a market analyst company Canalys Pete Cunningham said, “Despite holding 38 percent market share of the smartphone market, Nokia’s failure to compete with the iPhone and high-tier Android devices, combined with its lack of progress in gaining significant traction in the United States, has led to press and investor dissatisfaction.”

Some commenters suggested that Nokia chose Mr. Elop partly because he is a Canadian, following criticism of American candidates by the Finnish press. However a Nokia spokesman rejected this, saying, “Nationality was not a selection criteria.”

Stephen Elop was president and CEO of the graphics and web-development software house Macromedia prior to its acquisition by Adobe in 2005. He then joined Microsoft as President of Microsoft’s Business Division in January, 2008. Commenting on his new role he said, “Nokia has a unique global position as well as a great brand upon which we can build. The Nokia slogan clearly states our key mission: Connecting People, which will acquire new dimensions as we build our portfolio of products, solutions and services.”

In the announcement the Chairman of the Nokia Board of Directors Jorma Ollila stressed an expected shift of focus from hardware to software. “His [Stephen Elop’s] strong software background and proven record in change management will be valuable assets as we press harder to complete the transformation of the company. We believe that Stephen will be able to drive both innovation and efficient execution of the company strategy in order to deliver increased value to our shareholders”.

Nokia stated in an official blog post, “Nokia is transitioning from a hardware manufacturer of mobile devices to a software and solutions business. …Stephen’s background in the software industry is one of his key strengths.”

Pa Auto Insurance Laws Did You Know About These No Fault Insurance Laws?

Pa Auto Insurance Laws Did You Know About These No Fault Insurance Laws?

By R Daniel Williams

Getting your car insured in PA is tricky. Actually, we mean you need to be aware of some legal issues if you really want to make the most out of your PA auto insurance policy. The law of Pennsylvania demands that all automobiles are covered by at least a minimal level of auto insurance. Now, the law specifies some special category of PA auto insurance coverage and some specific limits are set.

Let’s take a closer look at the supposed no fault clause. Some people say it’s a misnomer somehow. The laws in Pennsylvania in this regard are smart combination of the “no-fault” and “at fault” approach. Basically, laws in PA let a driver to pick one between no fault policies and the customary coverage, despite there’re mandates in PA law.

For an example, a No Fault policy in PA auto insurance law applies straight to all sorts of medical expenditures or loss of wages that incurred due to a car accident. Expenses for every driver involved in that accident will be covered by dint of their respective individual policy. And such provisions apply disregarding who among the drivers were responsible for the auto accident. Nevertheless, reports are taken from authorities, witnesses and on duty police. Like we just said, the costs are bore only through the policies that each insured holds, instead of the traditional approach of bearing those expenses through the PA auto insurance policy of that driver who was found responsible for an accident.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wusq784K0MY[/youtube]

On the other hand, if your PA auto insurance policy holds an At Fault provision, things could be a lot different. In this case, compensations are paid for the pain and/or suffering of the injured or other types of losses which are not in any way linked to those billed expenses. That means, when a person found to be responsible for the accident due to his or her negligence, will have to compensate the injured people since they were harmed by his faults that lead to the accident.

But no matter what your PA auto insurance policy holds, you can’t do without it usually, as the state law makes it mandatory of all car owners to have a minimum level of coverage for their vehicle. Putting it straight and simple, drivers are required to carry at least some liability insurance coverage. This is meant for protecting PA drivers from getting financially handicapped because of the huge claims that might be filed against them if they’re at fault on the event of an accident.

Just in case you didn’t know, the law related to PA auto insurance requires that a minimum amount of $15,000 coverage is held for a person and $30,000 of coverage is held for each incident. This generally is called the 15/30 coverage clause. According to the state law of PA, it’s also obligatory that you have a minimal no-fault coverage that will cover all the medical bills for you when you’re injured in an accident. The minimal coverage here is $5,000.

Car crashes into house in Suffolk, UK, seriously injuring man

Sunday, March 24, 2013

A male driver has been hospitalised with serious head injuries after the car he was in crashed into the corner of a house in Suffolk in the east of the United Kingdom. Members of the fire service attended the incident scene, which occurred in the Carlton Colville district of the town of Lowestoft, approximately seven minutes after it was reported to emergency services at approximately 0145 UTC today.

Although three people were inside the house when the car impacted it, none of them were hurt. However, the driver sustained serious injuries to the head. The road where the crash happened was temporarily closed while emergency services freed the driver from the red Audi TT. He was initially hospitalised in the James Paget Hospital in Great Yarmouth. He was subsequently relocated to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Structural engineers have been asked to examine the house. The house has been vacated by its occupants as analysis continues, police reported. It is not clear if the collision has caused the building to leak gas.

The cause of the incident is unknown at this stage. “Collision investigators will be at the scene today as we try to ascertain exactly what has occurred”, said Sergeant Bob Patterson. The Suffolk Constabulary Sergeant added: “At this early stage we could not speculate as to what has caused the crash.”
