Father accused of trying to sell daughter, child star of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’

Monday, April 20, 2009

Rafiq Qureshi, the father of Rubina Ali, a child star of the Academy Award winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, has been accused of trying to sell his daughter. Qureshi was brought in for questioning by Indian police after a British news agency made accusations that he tried to sell his daughter. Ali played the character Latika.

Ali was the youngest actress in the movie, only 9 years old. She currently resides in a very poor area of Mumbai with her step-mother, father, and brother. Funds have been set up for Ali’s education and the local government has agreed to give housing to the children in the family.

News of the World says the alleged sale came to light during a sting operation performed by the news agency. They allege that Qureshi tried to sell his daughter for US$290,000 (£200,000) to his brother-in-law Rajan More.

“On Sunday, Rubina’s mother Khurshid complained to us that her ex-husband was trying to sell her daughter, saying she saw some reports on television to that effect,” said deputy Indian police commissioner, Nisar Tamboli to Reuters. Police say he tried to sell Ali to his brother-in-law because the family was not happy with the amount of money Ali was getting from her role in the film. More says Ali is not happy with living with her father.

“I have to consider what’s best for me, my family and Rubina’s future. We’ve got nothing out of this film,” said Qureshi as alleged by News of the World who also alleges that Ali’s brother Mohiuddin was in on the plan.

The family denies any wrongdoing and denies they tried to sell Ali.

“We never thought that we would have to face this. We are poor people, for us, our children are everything. Why would we give her away like that?,” said Moinuddin Qureshi, the uncle of Ali.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.

Benefits Of Exercise For Weight Loss}

Benefits Of Exercise For Weight Loss}

Submitted by: Adrian Joele

Regular exercise is more important than food intake, according to DR. Peter Wood of Stanford University. If an obese person does the right exercise at the right time,he can take in lots more calories than the amount used during exercise and still lose a lot of fat.

The right exercise is the key.

The usual advice in the weight-loss industry is aerobics, the more intense the better, which is all wrong!

Aerobic exercise that raise your heart rate above 120 beats per minute, which include running, rowing, swimming, cycling and many of the fancy aerobic classes in health clubs, all strip off muscle almost as fast as they strip off fat. Muscle loss reduces your ability to to burn fat and consequently you become fatter.

Muscle is the engine in which bodyfat is burned.

Walking is a good exercise as it burns some fat and it will not burn muscle. But far better exercise for fat control is wide-

variety, high-repetition resistance training, using weights or machines.

By exercising muscles all over your body it burns a lot of fat.

Resistance exercise has a further fat-loss advantage. It not only maintains muscle mass, it also increases muscle, providing more muscle cells in which fat will be burned.

The basic rules for muscle work are simple.By using heavy resistance exercises,so that you can only complete 3-6 repetitions of an exercise and you do 5-6 sets, you build maximum strength, but you dont lose much fat. However, if you set the weight so that

you run out of steam in 20-25 repetitions, and you do only one set, you build a little muscle, but burn a lot of fat.

Timing is also important with exercise.

Fat loss has little to do with calories during an exercise session, despite all those calorie charts showing that running burns more calories than walking and cross country skiing burns most calories of all.

Recent studies show that the right exercise raises your metabolic rate not only while you are doing it, but for up to 18 hours afterwards.

If you exercise in the evening and than go to bed, you lose most of the fat-loss effect, because sleep causes your metabolic rate to drop like a stone.

The key is to exercise in the morning, the earlier the better.

Another important factor is the number of exercise sessions per week.

If you exercise five times weekly, you lose three times as much fat as when you exercise only twice or three times per week, even if you exercise longer, according to Dr. Leonard Epstein, who analysed all the published studies on exercise and fat-loss.

People who exercised only once per week lost no fat at all.

Antioxidants protection against exercise damage.

Because exercise uses 12-20 times more oxygen than sitting in a chair, it also creates masses of free radicals that do a lot of oxidative damage to the body cells.

Oxidation is the primary cause of human degeneration. Without supplementing with antioxidants you are slowly killing yourself.

In order to reap the benefits of resistance exercise of muscle growth and reduction of body fat the smart way is to combat exercise oxidation damage by supplementation of high quality antioxidants.

Everyone is excited for this big event and kiters all over the country are flying their way to the said venue to experience the most awaited event that is going to happen, the King of the Beach Kiteboarding Festival.

Chris Bobryk, one of the most anticipated kiteboarder of the Kiteboarding Festival, was exhilarated after riding the waves of one of the most beautiful kiteboarding spot of the world, Lake Michigan, this Sunday afternoon. He also expresses his feeling towards the coming event. He said that right now it is a double black diamond conditions according to the 23 years old professional kiteboarder and former Whitehall resident. He even quoted his expectations towards the whole day event.

With all the kiteboarders lining up, gearing and preparing for everything to be done for the said event, the weather condition and the place is at the events side. Winds topping out near 40 mph in which explained the smaller amount of kiteboarders on the big lake Sunday which is the last day of the King of the Great Lakes Kitesurf Test Fest in which it is mainly hosted the best MACkite.

According to Bobryk, who lives in Cape Hatteras when he is not on tour or practicing his tricks and skills, This is not for inexperienced riders out there but its super fun. The King of the Beach Kiteboarding Festival is surely one of the most exciting and daring event of the season. It is definitely the most expected one for all professional riders all over the country and even the whole world. With more than 80 riders from around the Midwest who registered for the three-day event that concluded the Sunday evening according to MACkite employee Aaron Johnson who is an avid fan of kiteboarding ever since. So much to see and so much to do, most of the kiteboarders took to the water on Saturday during the time or somewhat the weather condition is calmer and preferable to practice according to him.

At one point there was between 50-60 kite boarders in the water in which it makes the water looks like a rainbow because of the color-filled display off the Grand Haven City Beach. It is truly a magical moment to watch. As Bobryk witnessed the event, although originally established as a competition, the event now is for people to get together to try new kites. Its like a family or friends get-together moment because of the bond, passion and commitment that you can see towards all the kiteboarders, participants and guests who witnessed the event.

Kevin Wade, one of the Best Kiteboarding representatives, quoted that it looks like a community that driven the event for people who share a passion, love and for trying out gear for the entire time. For them, it is not a competition, it looks like a gathering of loved ones to bond and just enjoy the moment till it last. You can see their happy faces from all over the place.

We hope everyone enjoyed the event and congratulations to all the participants of the King of the Beach Kiteboarding Festival.

As of 10:00 p.m EST November 8, 2006, the Democratic Party is projected to have gained control of both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate in the 2006 United States general elections. MSNBC projects that the Democrats now control 234 seats in the House of Representatives, 16 more seats than the 218 needed to control the House of Representatives as all 435 seats were up for election. In the Senate, where the balance of power is closer, one-third of all seats were up for grab. As of 10:00 p.m. EST, AP and Reuters were projecting that the Democrats had picked up all six seats they needed to retake the Senate, including the seats of incumbents Rick Santorum (Penn.), Lincoln Chafee (R.I.), Jim Talent (Missouri), Mike DeWine (Ohio), John Tester (Montana), and Jim Webb (VA). The Tester victory by less than 3,000 votes was projected at approximately 2 p.m. EST after the State of Montana announced the results of overnight recounts. Democrat Jim Webb has prevailed in that race by slightly more than 7,000 votes, though his opponent has not conceded and a recount may still occur.

Smoke from massive warehouse fire in Buffalo, New York USA can be seen 40 miles away

Monday, May 14, 2007

Buffalo, New York — A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.

As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.

“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.

According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.

At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.

At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.

One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.

Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.

Japanese survivor of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings dies, aged 93

Friday, January 8, 2010

Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only Japanese civilian to be officially recognized as having survived both the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States in August of 1945 at the conclusion of World War Two, has died this Monday at the age of ninety-three, due to stomach cancer—one of the numerous illnesses that he suffered throughout his lifetime as a direct result of his exposure to nuclear radiation.

Mr. Yamaguchi, although he was against his nation’s involvement in the War, worked as a engineer for Mitsubishi—a company that helped equip and supply the Japanese Imperial Army. He was on business in Hiroshima at the time of the first bombing on August sixth. His almost direct exposure to the atomic explosion temporarily blinded him, ruptured his ear drum (leaving him permanently deaf in his left ear), and severely burnt the top half of his body. Three days later, having gone back to work in Nagasaki, he was approximately three kilometers away from the site of the second bomb. Although he was exposed to significant radiation in this instance as well, Mr. Yamaguchi was left relatively unscathed.

Following Japan’s surrender and the end of the War days later, Mr. Yamaguchi worked as a translator for the occupying American forces and later as a local schoolmaster, before eventually returning to Mitsubishi—which had since then become an automobile manufacturer.

In his later years, Mr. Yamaguchi became a respected lecturer who gave talks about his experiences, and publicly spoke out against the stockpiling of nuclear weapons.

For instance, in 2006, he addressed the United Nations General Assembly. “Having been granted this miracle, it is my responsibility to pass on the truth to the people of the world,” Mr. Yamaguchi said to the Assembly. He went on to say, “My double radiation exposure is now an official government record. It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die.”

When asked by the British Broadcasting Corporation what his reaction was to Mr. Yamaguchi’s death, the mayor of Nagasaki said that “a precious storyteller has been lost.”

Among the family and friends Mr. Yamaguchi left behind were his three adult children—who have also had health issues in their lifetimes thus far that they think may have be related to their father’s initial exposure.

Cheap Car Loans: Your Key To Buying A Car At Cheap Rates

by

Kevin Clark

With the advent of so many facilities in our lives nowadays, it is not very difficult to purchase something like a car which can prove to be very useful to us. The buyer may not have enough money to pay the complete cost of the car in one go but he can take up cheap car loans for that purpose.

Cheap car loans can be borrowed for paying the price of the car to the dealer. By lump sum payment which the borrower can make through cheap car loans, the buyer can avail many schemes and offers like free servicing, bargaining on the car cost and similar privileges.

Cheap car loans can be obtained by pledging the car itself as the collateral with the lender. This is the secured form of the cheap car loans. By pledging collateral, the rate of the loan can be further reduced. However if the borrower does not want to pledge his car as collateral, he can take up the unsecured form of the cheap car loans. They are offered at slightly higher rate but come with a highly attractive collateral-free nature.

While borrowing cheap car loans the borrower is suggested the following:

The dealer should be approached only after the loan approval

The borrower should find out the market price of the car, especially in case of used cars so that a high price is not charged

he should try and negotiate the price of the car with the dealer

The loan deal should be scrutinized carefully for any hidden costs like processing fee, APR etc.

The key to obtaining cheap rates for car loans is research. Online research can help the borrower greatly in finding out the rates offered by various lenders. An application made online gets the quotes of various lenders. These quotes can be compared this way and cheap rates can be obtained.

Cheap car loans are also available to borrowers with bad credit score, CCJs, arrears or defaults in their credit history. Although they will have to work hard for getting competitive rates, it is surely worth the effort.

Cheap car loans provide a way to the common man to buy a car for himself. He should manage with a proper foresight and future concern.

Bangladesh security tightened following Pilkhana massacre and Bashundhara City fire

Friday, March 20, 2009

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started. The fire erupted on the 17th floor and spread quickly to the two floors above and engulfed the three floors below. The aerial ladders belonging to the Fire Service and Civil Defence reached as high as the 13th floor of the 21-storey building.

Videos have been sent to the United States (US) for examination to assist in determining the cause of the fire and to help in the damage assessment. Experts from the US are expected to arrive soon.

Firefighters were brought to the rooftop of the 20-storey tower by helicopter. The only fatality in this operation was Baki Billa, a firefighter of Bashundhara City firefighting department, who fell when climbing down a rope from a helicopter to the roof of the building. Three other firefighters made the transition safely. At this same time, the chief security officer was safely rescued by the Bangladesh Air Force helicopter, a Bell 212. Six security officers of the complex also lost their lives.
