American Academy of Pediatrics supports dairy for lactose intolerant children

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in the September 2006 issue of its journal Pediatrics, supports the use of dairy by lactose intolerant children.

Dr. Melvin B. Heyman, author of the article, says that just because a child is lactose intolerant, does not mean that they should avoid dairy altogether. Many lactose intolerant people can consume small amounts of dairy.

Heyman says that dairy consumption is important, especially for children, because of its high calcium content. The calcium is, in turn, important for stengthening growing bones. “If dairy products are eliminated,” the article says, “other dietary sources of calcium or calcium supplements need to be provided.”

Lactose intolerance is a condition, present in the majority of human population above the age of infancy, due to which the body cannot tolerate lactose, a sugar present in milk and other dairy products. Lactose intolerance causes a range of unpleasant abdominal symptoms, including stomach cramps, bloating, flatulence and diarrhea.

As lactose intolerance is inherent, its prevalence varies by ethnic group. For example, while only 12% of American Caucasians have it, its prevalence is 75% among African Americans, 93% among Chinese, 60%-80% among Ashkenazi Jews, and 100% among American Indians. Many people do not realize that they have this condition simply because they have eaten dairy all their lives and view the symptoms of lactose intolerance as “normal”.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has long stated that the risks of consuming dairy far outweigh the benefits. According to PRCM’s fact sheet, called “Parents’ Guide to Building Better Bones”, there are many healthy ways of getting enough calcium and promoting bone health. Many foods contain calcium, not just dairy. Also, it is important to consider the amount of calcium absorbed, not just the amount of calcium present in a food. For example, more than three times as much calcium is absorbed from one serving of Total Plus cereal as from one serving of 2% milk.

PCRM promotes a strictly vegetarian diet. Despite its name, it claims only 5 percent of its members as physicians. PCRM has also been accused of having links with animal rights “extremists”, in particular Jerry Vlasak, a former PCRM spokesman who called for the murder of scientists who use animals in research.

The report in News-Medical.Net says that Ann Marie Krautheim, with the National Dairy Council, a dairy lobbying group, says

she hopes the report will educate parents on how to continue to include dairy in the diets of children sensitive to lactose and also help improve their nutrient intake. Krautheim says calcium-fortified beverages and other foods which seek to provide an alternative source of calcium, do not provide an equivalent nutrient package to dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yogurt.

This last statement, however, that dairy products are superior to calcium-fortified foods, is not supported by the article in Pediatrics.

Landis asks for additional test

Monday, July 31, 2006

MADRID, Spain — Floyd Landis requested the testing of his backup urine sample today.

“We’ve sent the fax to the UCI this afternoon.” “Now we’ll have to adjust to their calendar,” said Jose Maria Buxeda, one of Landis’s two Spanish lawyers, of the Swiss-based International Cycling Union. Landis’s lawyers say they fully expect the backup test to confirm the original finding.

Oscar Pereiro of Spain, who finished second overall in the Tour de France, would be declared the winner if Landis loses the title.

Results will be revealed during the week.

‘Davos man’ versus ‘Camp Igloo’; 42nd World Economic Forum convenes in Swiss alps

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel gave yesterday’s opening address to the 42nd meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), which is facing a distinctly different geo-political landscape from twelve months ago. Outside the WEF security cordon, in the sub-zero temperatures of Davos’ train station car park, the local incarnation of the Occupy movement are setting up ‘Camp Igloo’; but, with little hope of the archetypes of the 1%, ‘Davos Man’, arriving by public transport and seeing their sub-zero protest.

David Roth, heading the Swiss centre-left’s youth wing — and an organiser of ‘Camp Igloo’, echoes much of the sentiment from ‘Occupy’ protests around the world; “[a]t meetings the rest of society is excluded from, this powerful ‘1 percent’ negotiates and decides about the fate of the other 99 percent of this world, […] economic and financial concentration of power in a small, privileged minority leads to a dictatorship over the rest of us. The motto ‘one person, one vote’ is no longer valid, but ‘one dollar, one vote’.”

Roth’s characterisation of ‘Davos Man’, a term coined by the Professor Samuel Huntington of Harvard University, is more emotive than that of the late professor who saw ‘Davos man’ as “[having…] little need for national loyalty, view[ing] national boundaries as obstacles that thankfully are vanishing, and see[ing] national governments as residues from the past whose only useful function is to facilitate the elite’s global operations”.

As Reuters highlights, many attendees will opt to make their way from Zurich to Davos by private jet, or helicopter, and the WEF itself provides handouts indicating the cost of such is 5,100 Swiss francs (approx. 5,500 USD, 3,500 GBP, 4,200 EUR). In contrast: travelling by rail, even when opting for first class — without an advance booking, is 145 Swiss francs (approx. 155 USD, 100 GBP).

Shifting fortunes see several past attendees missing this year’s exclusive get-together in the alpine resort; for a second year running — and now caught up in the UK phone hacking scandal being scrutinised by Lord Leveson’s inquiry — media mogul Rupert Murdoch will not be attending. Nor will the former head of financial services company UBS Oswald Gruebel, who resigned in the wake of US$2.3 billion losses incurred through unauthorised trading; likewise, Philipp Hildebrand, the ex-head of the Swiss National Bank, is absent following scandal associated with his wife’s currency trading activities; and, although the sexual assault charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn were dropped, having stepped down as managing director of the International Monetary Fund Strauss-Kahn will also be absent.

As the #OccupyWEF protesters were building igloos last weekend, an anti-WEF protest in the Swiss capital Berne was broken up by police, who stated their intent to prosecute participants in the illegal protest. Allegations of calls for violent protest action led to a high number of officers being involved. In the aftermath, charges of breach of the peace are to be brought against 153 people, with some targeted for more serious offences. At least one group involved in the protest described the police response as “disproportionate”.

At ‘Camp Igloo’ Roth says he is seeking discussions with the WEF’s expected 2,000 attendees; but his voice, and that of others in the worldwide ‘Occupy’ movement, is unlikely to be given a platform in the opening debate, “Is 20th-century capitalism failing 21st-century society?” He, and others taking part in this Swiss incarnation of the ‘Occupy’ movement, are still considering an invite to a side-session issued by the World Economic Forum’s founder, Klaus Schwab; commenting on the invite Roth told the Associated Press they would prefer a debate at a more neutral venue.

As has been the case for several years now, the annual Forum meeting in Davos was preceded with the release of a special report by the World Economic Forum into risks seen as likely to have an impact the in the coming decade. The 2012 Global Risks Report is a hefty document; the 64-page report is backed with a variety of visualisation tools designed to allow the interrelations between risks to be viewed, how risks interact modelled, and their potential impacts considered — as assessed by the WEF’s panel of nearly 500 experts.

As one would expect, economic risks top both the 2012 impact and likelihood charts. Climate change is pushed somewhat further down the list of concerns likely to drive discussions in Davos. “Major systemic financial failure” — the collapse of a globally important financial institution, or world currency, is selected as the risk which carries the most potential impact.

However, “Chronic fiscal imbalances” — failing to address excessive government debt, and “Severe income disparity” — a widening of the the gulf between rich and poor, top the list of most likely risks.

At the other end of the tables, disagreeing respectively with the weight last year’s Wikinews report gave to orbital debris, and the Motion Picture Association of America’s (MPAA) fight with the Internet over copyright legislation, the 2012 Global Risks Report places “Proliferation of Orbital Debris” and “Failure of intellectual property regime” bottom of the league in terms of potential impact.

In 2011, with the current global economic crisis well under-way, “Fiscal crises” topped the WEF risks with the largest potential impact in the next ten years. However, perceived as most likely a year ago, “Storms and cyclones”, “Flooding”, and “Biodiversity loss” — all climate-change related points — were placed ahead of “Economic disparity” and “Fiscal crises”.

More mundane risks overtake the spectre of terrorism when contrasting this year’s report with the 2011 one; volatility in the prices of commodities, consumer goods, and energy, and the security of water supplies are all now ranked as more likely risks than terrorism — though the 2011 report did rank some of these concerns as having a higher potential impact. A significant shift in perception sees the 2012 report highlight food shortages almost as likely a risk the world will face over the next decade; and, one with a far more significant impact.

Attending the World Economic Forum at Davos is more than just an opportunity to discuss the current state of the global economy, and review the risks which face countries around the world. With such a high number of political and business leaders in attendance, it is an ideal opportunity to pursue new trade deals.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is, in addition to being a keynote speaker, expected to pursue improved relations with European and Asian trade partners at private meetings on the Forum sidelines. The Toronto Star reports Harper is likely to push forward an under-negotiation Canadian-European free-trade agreement, and hold closed-door discussions prior to next month’s planned trip to China.

Similarly, Canadian trade minister Ed Fast is expected to meet South Korean counterparts to discuss an equivalent deal to the preferential ones between the Asian nation and the US and Europe. Fast’s deal does, however, face opposition at home; the Canadian Auto Workers union asserts that such a deal would put 33,0000 jobs at-risk.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and chancellor George Osborne are expected to discuss a possible increase of UK funding to the International Monetary Fund (IMF); however, with the UK responsible for 4.5% of the US$400 billion in the IMF’s lending fund, backbench MPs have warned that committing any additional funds could provoke a Conservative revolt in parliament. Tuesday’s IMF cut of predicted global growth from 4% to 3.3%, warnings of a likely Eurozone recession in 2012, and ongoing problems with Greek financial restructuring, are likely discussion topics at Davos — as well as amongst UK backbench MPs who see adding to the IMF war-chest as bailing out failed European economies.

South Africa, less centre-stage during the 2011 Forum, will be looking to improve relationships and take advantage of their higher profile. President Jacob Zuma and several cabinet members are attending sessions and discussions; whilst former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown is to moderate a session, “Africa — From Transition to Transformation“, with Nigeria, Guinea, and South Sudan’s presidents on the panel. Wal-mart’s CEO Doug McMillon is to lead a dinner session, “Shared Opportunities for Africa’s Future” — highlighting larger multinationals looking towards the continent for new opportunities.

Davos may also serve as a place to progress disputes out of the public eye; a high-profile dispute between Chile’s state-owned copper mining business, Codelco, and Anglo American plc over the 5.39 billion USD sale of a near-quarter stake in their Chilean operations to Japan’s Mitsubishi, prompted the Financial Times to speculate that, as the respective company chiefs — Diego Hernández and Cynthia Carroll — are expected to attend, they could privately discuss the spat during the Forum.

Toilet paper running thin in New Jersey capital

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Toilet paper supplies in Trenton, the capital of the US state of New Jersey, may run out by week’s end following their city council’s dispute over budgets.

The council has declined to sign a contract for paper products worth $42,573 after falling out over a $4,000 charge for paper cups.

Lauren Ira, a spokeswoman for Mayor Tony Mack, said that while the money has been made available to purchase the tissue, the Council is unwilling to sign the contract. The decision means that buildings such as Trenton City Hall may run out of toilet paper by Friday.

Former police officer George Muschal, now Trenton’s South Ward Councilman, spoke of the decision in an interview with Bloomsberg. He said the Council was not willing to bow to Mack’s order for paper cups, designed to carry hot beverages. He cited reports that the extreme nature of the order was down to fears some cups would be “stolen” for home use. He told the website: “We’re the checks and balances over the administration, and we’re not going to send out any blank checks.”

The rejected contract for paper products is part of a $182.6 million budget laid out by Mack in November. The budget has yet to be adopted due to arguments over its viability; if agreed, it will go into place on July 1, the start of the new fiscal year.

Brazil’s Minas state stops sales of Toyota Corolla

Friday, April 23, 2010

Minas, one of the largest states of Brazil, has stopped the sale of the Toyota Corolla over safety concerns.

The move was made after nine Corolla customers reported that their cars automatically accelerated. The state public prosecutor’s office said in an online statement on Tuesday that the problem is blamed on accelerator pedals sticking underneath floor mats. Local government said the issue was “putting in danger the lives of occupants”.

According to the prosecutor’s office, sales of Corollas may resume when Toyota alters the floormats in its current models. Toyota has recalled over eight million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems.

Israel undergoes major emergency drill

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Israel has tested its readiness for a state of war and emergency by testing its emergency services and shelters on a national scale.

The drill is to be analyzed in order to determine the elements which need to be corrected and fixed, and Israel’s emergency readiness is to be assessed.

Israeli school children were told to hide under their school tables as part of the drill, which officials claimed to be the biggest drill ever in Israeli history.

Syria has claimed, in return, that the drill is intended as a battle readiness exercise and claims that Israel is preparing for war.

2012 Olympics clash with Ramadan

Sunday, October 15, 2006

Muslim groups from across the world are criticising the organisers of the 2012 Olympics in London after it was revealed that the games will take place over Ramadan. The most holy month in the Muslim calendar, which will take place from the 21 July to 20 August in 2012, involves fasting during daylight hours and will affect an estimated 3,000 athletes.

Joanna Manning Cooper, spokesman for the games said: “We did know about it when we submitted our bid and we have always believed that we could find ways to accommodate it.” Nevertheless, this will come as a huge embarrassment for the organisers who have tried to ensure the event involve all of Britain’s ethnic communities. A quarter of the athletes who took part in the 2004 Athens Olympics were from predominantly Muslim countries and the fast will put any athletes involved at a clear disadvantage.

The chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, Massoud Shadjared said: “This is going to disadvantage the athletes and alienate the Asian communities by saying they don’t matter. It’s not only going to affect the participants, it’s going to affect all the people who want to watch the games.”

The president of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, Togay Bayalti, said: “This will be difficult for Muslim athletes. They don’t have to observe Ramadan if they are doing sport and travelling but they will have to decide whether it is important to them. “It would be nice for the friendship of the Games if they had chosen a different date.”

The games will run from the 27 July to 12 August to coincide with the British Summer holidays. The summer holidays are a six week period running from mid July to early September. During this time, public transportation is generally less crowded and it will be easier to find the 70,000 volunteers needed to keep the games running. The International Olympics Committee has specified that the games must take place between July 15 to August 31. Giselle Davies, IOC spokesperson said, “We give a window to the five bid cities. The host city selects the dates within that window.”

The organisers are working with the Muslim Council of Great Britain to find ways around the problem.

I am sure your quest for Student Loans Company has come to an end as you read this article. Yes, gone are those days when we have to search endlessly for Student Loans Company information or other such information like Smart loan Com, FASFA Financial Aid, Free Credit Card For College Student Loan, College Invests Student Loan, Government Guaranteed Student Loans or even Canadian Government Student Jobs. Even without articles such as this, with the Internet all you have to do is log on and use any of the search engines to find the Student Loans Company information you need.

Furthermore, if the monthly payments are just too high, student loan consolidation experts can still help you out. Typically, with consolidation you can stretch the repayment time from ten years to up to thirty years, which means your payments would be less. Actually, with the help of student loan consolidation experts, your new payments each month could be up to 54% less, than without consolidation. What a saving! Of course, there are other student loan consolidation programs available including the Direct Student Loan Consolidation, which requires a borrower to have at least one Direct Student Loan, a verifiable income, and no adverse credit to qualify. Another type is the Private Student Loan Consolidation, which, though not as attractive as the Federal Student Loan Consolidation, is feasible for the former student who is set in a job and has a means of support. These loans run for up to twenty, sometimes thirty years, depending on the lender. Though a somewhat higher interest rate averaging from 6-10%, they are still more attractive than the average consumer loan and allow the borrower to get from under his or her student loans and begin life as a tax-paying citizen. Student loans are like any other loan. You need to be cautious of how much you borrow and how much you’ll need to pay back. Weigh the costs and the benefits just as you would any loan, but don’t let it keep you from returning to college or just starting out. The cost of not going is always much greater. KEEP READING — That’s right. Keep reading and you will find other Student Loans Companies related information that will not only excite you but also educate you about Student Loans Company in general and even other Direct Student Loan Payments, FAFSA Web, Education One Student Loan, Government Grants For Student Loans, Federal Student Loan Database and Direct Student Loan Services information. Alternative methods of borrowing money, student loans are far easier and less hassles. Many students have found that credit cards create a lifetime of trouble down the road; therefore, they simply are not suitable for charging food, gas, textbooks, or any other living expenses. Not to mention, just a bad way of managing money in general. With student loans, you will have the ability to live in a comfortable manner while attending college, with much lower rates of interest than those credit cards will charge. When it comes to a federal loan, the student is requiring filling out a form called FAFSA. This is important and must be done right away. Most schools offer a financial aid office, and they will carry these forms. There are other types of loans that include college loan solutions, ACT education loans, study abroad loans, international student loans, Stafford loans, or PLUS loans. Many people forget that they can get more information about any subject matter, be it Student Loans Company information or any other on any of the major search engines like Google.com. If you need more information about Student Loans Company, head on to Google.com and be more informed. As presented, student loan consolidation can help most borrowers in many ways. But, it is still necessary to note that rates won’t actually stay low without an end. In fact, they are so low now and the only place for rates to go is up. So, if you are on your way out of college, saving every cent you can in today’s tough job market is worth considering. And, regardless of the situation you are in to right now, consolidating your college loans is a practical decision. It was intriguing to find that many people, oblivious of their background, found this article related to Student Loans Company and other Canadian Federal Student Loans, Sun tech Student Loans, and even Federal Student Loan Requirements helpful.

7 Tips To Be Smart With Your Fundraising Calendars

7 Tips To Be Smart With Your Fundraising Calendars

Submitted by: Brent Durell

You should always be smart with any kind of fundraising ideas you want to implement. Success with these campaigns, particularly when using fundraising requires some smart moves and smart habits that will let you develop the most appealing prints for your consumers. Below is a list of seven special tips that will help you be appropriately smart with your fundraising calendars. Use this to become smart and cunning with your fundraising campaign.

1. Know the Industry Knowledge is power, and when you are creating fundraising calendars you might want to know the whole picture of the industry (or sub-industry) that you are working with. This means that you should try to research the current trends of the industry. What kind of fundraising calendars are being printed these days? Who are the ones printing fundraising calendars? Who are the best printers that cater to those people? What are the current costs of fundraising calendars and the typical estimated returns? Try to answer all these questions and you will be a little bit wiser with your design and printing decisions later on.

2. Know the Market Besides the whole industry, you might also want to know your market. Knowing who the people who you will be selling to is very crucial in the success of your fundraising campaign. Know their preferences in designs and pricing can come a long way with your decisions in developing your custom calendars. So make sure you do some decent market research if you want to really succeed in your campaign.

3. Always test and refine A wise designer always tests and refines his or her designs. For calendar printing, it is always smart to print a test calendar for you to give out and gain feedback from. Always try to get the constructive feedback from these tests and then refine your designs to make it more ideal to your audience. Testing is also the key to ironing out the quirks and mistakes in your design so that by the end, you will have a perfect custom calendar design ready for mass production.

4. Be detailed with your options When it comes to calendar printing itself, you should always be detailed and specify everything that you want to the calendar printer. Do not just let the calendar printing company decide these printing options for you. By being smart and choosing the precise paper materials, inks, coatings and other configurations, you can really control the pricing and of course the look of your color calendars. You won t pay for anything you do not like, maximizing your use of your limited resources for the best calendar prints that you can afford.

5. Use more than one distribution method When it comes to the marketing of your fundraising calendars, the smart thing to do is to always use more than one distribution method. Leaving your custom calendars at your shop for sale is not the only method you have to get those calendars sold. You can market in a wide variety of ways such as handing them out to your social network and getting your friends and family to help you sell them. You can also promote your color calendars online through Facebook, twitter and other social networking sites. You can also just print some posters and deploy them around the neighborhood to tell people that you are selling calendars for fundraising. The more you market out there the better your results for fundraising calendars. So do your work and be extensive.

6. Get the most ideal printer Of course you should also be smart when it comes to calendar printing. Do not just go for the first calendar printing company you see on the yellow pages or in a web search engine. Try to shop around always to get the best prices and the best quality prints out there. With only a little effort you may actually discover really great online calendar printing companies that have great discounts or generally lower prices for single batch orders. So always look for more calendar printer options, before settling on one.

7. Record and improve Finally, a smart designer or fundraiser will always want to know where he or she got it wrong and where it went right. That is why it is always good to keep actual records of your sales and the actual people who bought those fundraising calendars. You can even do a mini survey of sorts with some customers so that you can empirically know who the best customers are and what they like about your fundraising calendars. This will help you a lot in improving your calendars next time. Now that is a smart move to get more money on your next batch of fundraising calendars.

Great! That is how you can be smart with your fundraising ideas! Remember these seven smart tips and you ll be developing your custom calendars cunningly for the best possible results.
