Three dead in murder-suicide shooting at Southern California fast food restaurant

Sunday, June 20, 2010

A 6-year-old boy and his father were shot and killed Saturday afternoon while eating inside a busy Del Taco fast food restaurant in San Bernadino, California, before the shooter turned a gun on himself.

According to the San Bernadino Police Department, 56-year-old Jimmy Schlager arrived at the Del Taco at 1:15pm PST (2015 UTC) on a bicycle, and, armed with two semi-automatic guns, entered the restaurant and opened fire on a family of four who were dining together. The employees and other customers all ran out of the restaurant and escaped without injury.

The father of the family, identified as 33-year-old Alex Trujillo, was declared dead at the scene, said the San Bernadino Fire Department. His wife and two sons were taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center in critical condition. His 6-year-old son, Adrian, died shortly after. The victims each suffered two bullet wounds, except the mother, who police say received up to ten gunshots. The names of the 29-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son have not been released. Both remained in critical condition on Saturday night.

After shooting the family, Schlager, later identified as the woman’s step-father, shot himself in the head. He was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he later died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police said Schlager had previously been arrested a number of times, on charges that included theft and assault with a deadly weapon.

Apple introduces iPhone and Apple TV

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Apple Inc. today has introduced the much-anticipated iPhone at the Macworld Conference in San Francisco.

The iPhone is claimed to be “a revolutionary mobile phone” as stated on the Apple website. The device appears to be running a mobile version of the Apple operating system Mac OSX. It is approximately the same size as a 5th generation iPod, it has a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen display that is used to access all features of the phone including number dial, as well as making phone calls. The iPhone plays music, movies, displays pictures and is able to connect to a wireless network.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the device by walking onto the stage and taking the iPhone out of his jeans pocket. During his 2 hour speech he stated that “Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone, We are going to make history today”.

Today Apple also released their Media Center device – Apple TV. It will directly compete with Microsoft’s Media Center operating system. Apple has taken a different approach to the media center market; rather than storing content (such as movies, music and photos) on the device, Apple TV connects to a computer (Mac and Windows) over a wirless network connection and plays all content stored on that computer. This makes it substantially easier for users to organize their media content.

Don’t Forget To Say Thank You; A Quick Guide To A Perfect Thank You Note

Don’t Forget To Say Thank You; A Quick Guide To A Perfect Thank You Note

By Amy Carter

By now everyone should know that you’re supposed to say ‘thank you.’ And there is no nicer way to say it than with a well-written thank-you not. Not an email, not a text message, an honest-to-goodness handwritten thank-you note is appropriate for almost any situation. If you don’t already know how to write one, I’ve got a few tips for you.

The note itself

Keep a stash of thank-you notes handy. If you have to go out and buy one each time you need one, you’re less likely to do it. Having notes on-hand makes it easy to jot down a quick – but thoughtful – note of thanks. You don’t need a full size sheet of paper but a smaller folded card works wonderfully. You’ll be surprised at how far a note like this will go for your hostess or gift giver.

Social and personal thank-you notes

Sending a note to your host or hostess or gift-giver should be done as soon as possible. Get your note in the mail the next day if you can. Your note doesn’t have to be poetry. You just need a few sentences that are meaningful. Thank them for the gift or party, let them know how much you appreciate their thoughtfulness and suggest you get together again soon. You really only need three or four sentences to get your point across and make a nice impression. You don’t have to get too detailed or specific. And you don’t have to go on about the many uses of the gift or the details of the party. Keep it short and sweet and you’ll do the trick nicely.

Corporate thank you

A well-worded and timely thank-you note is just as important in business as it is in your social life. Your business relationships are important, so take time to compose a thank-you and you won’t regret it. You don’t need to be ‘all business’ in your corporate thank-you, but you do need to be professional. Thank them for their help, hard work, gift, etc., make sure they know that you enjoyed working with them (or continue to enjoy working with them) and look forward to working together again soon. A thank-you note to your boss/superior can follow the same format. While you should stay away from gushing phrases like ‘you’re the best boss ever’ I would mention how much you enjoy working for the company. Letting your boss know that you are grateful and happy is fitting for just almost any occasion.

Wedding thank you

Once you’re married and back from your honeymoon, you should really take time to sit down and write out your thank-you notes. Don’t stress, it can be easy. Stick to the social thank-you above and you’ll be fine. ‘Thank you for the gift. We are already using it. We love it. We hope we can get together at such and such event soon. Thank you again. Love, the newlyweds.’ This is not a template, but merely a suggestion. Timing is also very important. I’ve heard rumors that brides are allowed up to one year to send a thank-you not. Frankly, I think this is a little long. Take a few minutes to compose a note as soon as you can and your gift-giver will be so happy to hear that you’re enjoying your gift.

A thank-you note is an easy but important gesture. Personally anytime I can open mail that is not just or a bill, it makes me smile. Your thank-you note can be unexpected and just might brighten up the recipient’s day. And let’s face it, sending a thank-you note is the right thing to do.

IMF: World on brink of recession; prepares special loan program

Thursday, October 9, 2008

The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says the world is on the brink of a global recession but predicts the economy will begin to recover by late 2009.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Managing Director of the IMF, stressed nations must work together to avert a global recession and warns there is “no domestic solution” to the crisis. He also said this week’s coordinated interest rate cuts around the world are a good example of the international cooperation needed to restore faltering economies.

Furthermore, he announced the IMF has activated an emergency program Wednesday that allows the fund to provide loans more easily and quickly to emerging countries in economic trouble. This program was first used during the 1997 Asian crisis.

The program might be used in Iceland, which has seen major problems hitting the financial sector. Iceland has been forced to nationalize the three largest banks and, most recently, Kaupthing Bank.

The IMF chief made these remarks in Washington D.C. on Thursday, as top officials from IMF nations and the G-7 industrialized countries are gathering for meetings on economic issues. U.S. President George Bush is set to meet with G-7 finance ministers at the White House on Saturday.

‘Jelly bellies’ memo costs Florida police chief his job

Thursday, November 2, 2006

Winter Haven, Florida police chief Paul Goward was tired of seeing fat hanging out over the belts of some of his officers. So he posted a memo to encourage the so-called ‘jelly bellies’ to get in shape.

The memo, entitled ‘Are You A Jelly Belly?’ didn’t single anyone out, and, apart from the title, didn’t call anyone names.

Goward, a former deputy police chief in Wichita, wrote “If you are unfit, do yourself and everyone else a favor. See a professional about a proper diet and a fitness training program, quit smoking, limit alcohol intake…Don’t mean to offend, this is just straight talk. I owe it to you.”

It provided a list of 10 reasons cops should get fit. Goward said that overweight cops poorly represent the profession, are liable to ‘poop out’ when chasing suspects, and may have to use a higher degree of force.

In the end, Goward resigned from his position as police chief.

Australian swimmer Steph Rice announces retirement

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

One of Australia’s most famous swimming Olympians, Stephanie Rice, 25, announced her retirement earlier today.

The swimmer addressed the Australian public in a video. Here she thanked everyone that has supported her and reflected back on her Olympic career, “It’s sad, I definitely feel like I’m losing a part of myself, but I’m really excited about what’s about to come.”

After several shoulder operations in the lead up to the 2012 London Olympics, Rice fell short of her own expectations. Disappointed with her performance, she says she wanted to give herself a year or two break before making any decisions about the future. “I felt a lot of pressure to live up to everyone’s expectations and fulfil their answers, but I knew I had to take the time for myself to get to the point where I knew 100 percent what I wanted to do,” she says.

Long-time swimming coach Michael Bohl confirmed Rice’s doubts after the London Olympics in a telephone interview with The Associated Press today. “She couldn’t get the best out of herself there,” he says “but with what she endured, she didn’t want to retire with question marks. She wanted a year or two to think about it.”

While Rice has left her career plans unanswered, she hopes to use her popularity with the Australian public as a platform to something else. “It’s safe to say that’s the new goal and new passion for me… to prove myself out of the water.”

Sudan’s Vice President killed in helicopter crash

Monday, August 1, 2005

John Garang, recently sworn in as Vice President of the Sudan, was confirmed dead after his helicopter disappeared yesterday. Sudanese state television initially reported him to be alive but it now appears Mr. Garang died after his helicopter crashed.

Garang became Vice President in a historic deal, which ended the southern rebellion after 20 years of fighting. The deal created a government of national unity, giving hope to many that problems endemic to the region, including the Janjaweed militia in Darfur, could finally be solved and that the Muslim north could come to liveable terms with the Christian south.

Garang was making an official trip to Uganda when bad weather struck; his helicopter had not arrived at its destination and was out of contact leading many to fear the worst.

The BBC reports that “large-scale” rioting has broken out in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, with supporters of Mr. Garang battling armed police. Disturbances are also reported in the south of the country. Some southerners believe that the Sudanese authorities were behind the crash, according to USA Today, which draws parallels with the shooting down of a plane carrying Rwanda’s President Habyarimana in 1994. Habyarimana’s assassination helped trigger Rwanda’s infamous genocide, recently portrayed in the movie “Hotel Rwanda”.

Garang’s party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, has appealed for calm, insisting that his death was an accident.

In a press release published on the website Allafrica.com, Uganda’s President Museveni appeared to be keeping an open mind about the circumstances of the crash, which he says took place on the Ugandan-Sudanese border. “The helicopter was a recently overhauled executive helicopter that has served us well for the last 8 Years”, he is quoted as saying, detailing a number of technical improvements recently made to the craft. In the same statement, Museveni announces the creation of a panel of experts to investigate the crash. “We have also approached a certain foreign government to rule out any form of sabotage or terrorism”, he says.

Geneticists produce laser-activated killer mice

Sunday, January 15, 2017

In research released on Thursday in Cell, scientists from Yale University report they managed to trigger instinctive hunting behavior in mice using optogenetics, a manner of priming cells within an organism’s brain to switch on when exposed to a laser.

The research team used an engineered virus to target and alter specific sets of neurons. Then they fitted the mice with intracranial optical fibers so they could expose their brains to blue light at will. The system excited two different sets of neurons, both located in the amygdala, which is the part of the brain associated with emotion and aggression. One set stimulated prey pursuit behavior, such as stalking, and the other stimulated the animal to use its jaw and neck muscles. When exposed to the laser, the primed mice would first stalk and then pounce on and bite any object in their enclosure, even objects without any food scent or prey value, like sticks and bottle caps.

“We’d turn the laser on and they’d jump on an object, hold it with their paws and intensively bite it as if they were trying to capture and kill it,” says lead investigator and Yale Associated Professor of Psychiatry Ivan de Araujo. The mice behaved normally at all other times.

The work was inspired by Araujo’s desire to study natural feeding behavior, as opposed to animals passively munching on food pellets. The study covered many parts of the brain already known to be associated with feeding, and the results suggested some areas are associated with both hunting and feeding and others only with just one behavior. Stimulation of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) portion of the brain controlled stalking and stimulation of the reticular formation controlled biting. The researchers say this shows the amygdala is likely to control hunting and biting behavior across many or all jawed vertebrates. The experiments were funded by national research organizations in the United States and China and the government of Brazil.

The findings inspired comparisons by the research team and the press to zombies from The Walking Dead, especially since the behavior was more pronounced when the animals were hungry. Researchers noted the subjects did not attack any of the other mice. The scientists say this shows they were stimulating predatory behavior specifically and not making the animals generally more angry or aggressive.

However, the study did not state whether the laser resembled the light of a full moon.
