BBC receives 487 complaints after ‘Dancing’ race row

Friday, October 9, 2009

The BBC has received 487 complaints after Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Anton du Beke used a racist remark for his dance partner. Actress contestant Laila Rouass, who is of Morrocan descent, was called a “paki” by her dance partner during rehearsals for the show. British tabloid News of the World revealed the information from the BBC One programme in their newspaper on Sunday.

By Monday, it had emerged that there had been 63 complaints to the corporation. Since Thursday, the racist comment by du Beke has caused a total of 487 complaints to the BBC. Du Beke has since apologised to Rouass for the comment.

Bruce Forsyth, who presents the show alongside Tess Daly, had an unscheduled interview with radio show TalkSport on Wednesday. During the interview he said that, in days gone by, the remark would not have been treated so seriously. He said: “You go back 25, 30, 40 years and there has always been a bit of humour about the whole thing.

Everybody has a nickname.

“Americans used to call us ‘limeys’ which doesn’t sound very nice, but we used to laugh about it. Everybody has a nickname,” Forsyth stated to the BBC Radio 5 Live show. “I’m sure there was nothing vindictive about what he [Anton du Beke] said…the page should be closed on it. It’s a damn shame and I feel for him and Laila, she’s a lovely girl. He is a lovely, sensitive guy. OK, he can be a bit mouthy and can say quick things off-the-cuff like I do. But when you’re like that you can slip up every now and again. You can say something that you don’t mean.”

As a result of the comments made by Bruce Forsyth, the Victoria Derbyshire show received a record 600 complaints from listeners. Afterwards, Forsyth apologised for the comments he made on the show, and released a statement on Thursday saying: “To be absolutely clear, the use of racially offensive language is never either funny or acceptable.” A spokesperson for the BBC has also said: “The BBC does not condone offensive language in the workplace. Anton du Beke has apologised to Laila, who has accepted his apology.”

Kulvinder Ghir, an actor from Asia, showed his dissatisfaction for what was said on the radio show, stating: “Claiming the word paki is harmless is just ignorance.”

There has been calls made from viewers to the BBC over the last few days to dismiss Anton du Beke from Strictly Come Dancing. Earlier this year, former The One Show presenter Carol Thatcher was dismissed from ITV1 reality TV show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! due to racist remarks she made while on the programme. Despite this incident, the BBC have decided not to sack Anton du Beke from the BBC One dancing show.

The BBC has now had 686 complaints since Friday, an increase of 199 complaints from Thursday.

Mini Excavators Can Make Your Work Easier

Mini Excavators Can Make Your Work Easier

byphineasgray

Whether you are carrying out an excavation project at home or whether you require one to carry out your work as a business, it is important to consider the type and size that you require in order to carry out the work effectively. While standard and large excavators are ideal for some bigger jobs, there are many smaller jobs that do not warrant the use of larger machinery and this is where mini excavators can prove ideal. These can help to make your work far easier, as they are ideally sized for smaller projects.

With mini excavators you can access smaller spaces and areas that would be difficult or even impossible to access with a standard one, which is why these smaller sized excavators are so perfect for certain jobs. Depending on the nature of your job and whether you are able to operate an excavator, you can opt for machine hire only or hire experts to actually carry out the work in one of these excavators, which means that you also have plenty of flexibility when carrying out smaller projects.

Hiring a mini excavator for your project

Whatever your needs, an established excavator hire company y will be able to cater for your needs with either excavator hire or a range of excavation services delivered by professionals with plenty of experience in the field. If you are looking for a suitable provider to help with your home or construction project, some of the things to consider include:

 • The level of experience offered: It is advisable to find an established excavator hire company with plenty of experience when it comes to either hiring out the machines or providing a full excavation service. This makes it easier to find a company that is able to cater specifically for your needs.
 • The choice of services: If you are looking for excavation services rather than just excavator hire, it is important to check and see exactly what types of services are available from the company you are considering using. Again, this will help to determine whether the provider is able to cater for your requirements.
 • The cost of hire or services: Cost will always be an important factor whether you are a resident or a business, so another thing that you need to check is whether the company is able to offer competitive pricing on services or mini excavator hire.

These are all important considerations that will help to ensure you make the right decision when selecting a suitable provider for your excavation project.

Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The 1999 and 2000 year model Honda Civic SiR tops the list of Canada’s most stolen cars.

Consumer popularity also assures the cars will be popular with thieves. Its the second year in a row the Honda SiR has topped the list.

Rick Dubin Vice President of Investigations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said “The Civics are easy targets.”

Dubin said that once stolen, the cars are most often sold to “chop shops” where thieves completely dismantle the vehicles. The automobile’s individual parts are worth more than the entire car.

The sheer numbers of the cars and their lack of theft deterrent systems make them thieves’ preferred choices.

1999 and 2000 Honda Civics do not come with an electronic immobilizer, however all Hondas from 2001 and onward are equipped with an immobilizer. Immobilizers will be mandatory on all new cars sold beginning September 2007. The devices enable an engine computer to recognize an electronic code in the key. If the code in the key and the engine don’t match exactly, the vehicle can’t be started.

In third place was the 2004 Subaru Impreza, while the 1999 Acura Integra came in fourth, with the 1994 Honda Civic rounding out the top five.

In sixth place, the 1998 Acura Integra, and the 1993 Dodge Shadow completed seventh.

When asked why early model vehicles are selected, he said that, “auto thieves continue to find it easier to steal older vehicles lacking an IBC-approved immobilizer. We’ve seen this trend developing for several years, and these results confirm it.”

Another Honda automobile, the 1996 year model Civic filled eighth place, with the 2000 German Audi TT Quattro in ninth.

The American 1996 Chevrolet/GMC Blazer rounded out the top ten.

None of the above cars had an electronic immobilizer.

Barack Obama presents rescue plan after GM declaration of bankruptcy

Monday, June 1, 2009

In a televised speech from the White House at 16:00 UTC today, President of the United States Barack Obama presented a reorganization plan following the 12:00 UTC announcement by General Motors that it had filed for bankruptcy and Chapter 11 protection from its creditors, the largest bankruptcy of a U.S. manufacturing company.

Describing the problem with the company as one that had been “decades in the making,” Obama explained the rationale behind his proposed reorganization plan for General Motors. He stated that his intent was not to “perpetuat[e] the bad business decisions of the past,” and that loaning General Motors money, when debt was its problem, would have been doing exactly that. His plan, he stated, was for the United States government, in conjunction with the governments of Canada and Ontario (which he thanked for their roles alongside the government of Germany which he thanked for its role in selling a corporate stake in GM Europe), to become shareholders in General Motors. The United States government would hold a 60% stake. The government will give GM a capital infusion of US$30 billion in addition to the funds it has already received.

Of the government ownership he stated that he refused “to let General Motors and Chrysler become wards of the state”, and described the bankruptcy of Chrysler, and the bankruptcy of General Motors that he envisioned as being “quick, surgical, bankruptcies”. He pointed to the bankruptcy of Chrysler as an example of what he envision for General Motors, but stated that General Motors was a “more complex company” than Chrysler.

Responding to challenges voiced by political opponents, before the speech, that the federal government would actively participate in the affairs of the restructured company, he stated that he had “no interest” in running GM, and that the federal government would “refrain from exercising its rights” as a corporate shareholder for the most part. In particular, he stated that the federal government would not exercise its rights as a shareholder to dictate “what new type of car to make.” He stated that he expected the restructured GM to make “high quality, safe, and fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow,” and several times described what he anticipated as “better” and “fuel-efficient” cars, after a streamlining of GM’s brands.

He said to the general public that “I will not pretend that the hard times are over.” He described the financial hardship that some — shareholders, communities based around GM plants, GM dealers, and others — would undergo as a “sacrifice for the next generation” on their parts, so that their children could live in “an America that still makes things,” concluding that one day the United States might return to a time when the maxim (a widely-repeated mis-quotation of what Charles Erwin Wilson once testified before the U.S. Senate when nominated for the position of Secretary of Defense) would once more be true that “what is good for General Motors is good for the United States of America.”

Diagnosing Leaks From Vintage Gm &Amp; Chevrolet Turbo Hydramatic Automatic Transmissions

Diagnosing Leaks From Vintage Gm &Amp; Chevrolet Turbo Hydramatic Automatic Transmissions

By Tom I Stables

Vintage auto buffs restoring vintage Chevrolets may require basic service and diagnosis of standard run of the mill 400 and 400/475 Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmissions of their Chevys that are their automotive restoration project. They may want to do the work themselves or their local GM dealership service department or vintage auto community trusted mechanic may just be too busy. It may be the case that their local auto restoration expert of perhaps the local Chevy guy is instead perhaps working on more exotic cars and components and thus has given them the short shift. Here is a quick service guide for quick service on 400 & 400/475 GM especially Chevrolet Turbo Hydra-matic automatic transmissions especially in dealing with diagnosis of the causes of basic and simple transmission fluid leaks.

The Chevy enthusiast may be quite hamstrung and even alarmed to find fluid leaking out of the bottom of their project car onto the pavement or garage floor. Have heart and persistence. These older GM products are not only built like Chevies they were solidly built, relatively simple and made easy to work on. This you might notice is unlike mainly of the domestic and imported Japanese, Asian and European newer vehicles that your shop will come across and cannot really work on in any practical sense. That is of course without specialized tools available only and at and through you guessed the auto makers local dealerships service center and their factory trained mechanics and technicians.

The Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 and 400/475 transmissions are labeled as fully automatic units consisting primarily of a three element hydraulic torque converter and a compound planetary gear set. Three multiple-discs clutches. One sprag unit, one roller clutch and two bands provide the friction elements to obtain the desired function of the planetary gear set.

The first task in this series is to check fluid level which should be fairly standard procedure for auto owners. At normal operating (non cold being driven or warmed up) fluid levels on the transmission dip stick should be at the full (on Chevrolets and older GM products) or in some other trucks, cars and now SUVs at the max or maximum marking. Specifically with this turbo hydra-matic setup in case of cold tranny fluid measurements the level should lie approximately inch below the Add mark on the stick. Emphatically put only Dexron fluid should be used and nothing else ever.

Note that possible points for oil and transmission fluid leaks may generally occur at the following points: transmission old pan leaks resulting from attached bolts not correctly torqued damaging the pan gasket itself, pan gasket mounting face not flat. Rear extension leaks resulting from attaching bolts not properly torqued, rear seal assembly damaged, O ring in extension case damaged, porous casting. Other possibilities include case leaks resulting from filler pipe O ring damaged, modulator O ring seal damaged and governor cover O ring seal damaged. Next in line if you still have not diagnosed the case of leaking fluid or fluids onto your garage floor or driveway are speedometer ring O ring damage and breach, manual shift seal damages ,line pressure tap plug leakages resulting from worn threads or lacking sealing compound.

Lastly front end leaks may well originate and result from damaged front seal pumps that attach bolts and seals that have during the course of years and many miles coming loose and / or damaged as well, defective converter welds that while they may of held up previously have also during the course of time and miles given way. In addition you may choose to look for pump O ring seals that are damaged.

However the cause of your Dexron transmission fluid leaking onto your driveway or garage floor may be much simpler and easier to correct. If oil comes out of the vent pipe, then simply put your trouble may all in all be caused by a simple overfilling of fluid in your transmission , water in the fluid or a pump to case gasket simply mis-positioned.

U.S. Federal Judge overturns ephedra ban

Friday, April 15, 2005

A Park City, Utah, nutritional supplement manufacturer won its appeal against the FDA on Wednesday as a Federal Judge lifted a ban and sent the case back to the agency for revised rulemaking in accordance with the court’s decision.

Judge Tena Campbell ruled that no further enforcement of the FDA action can take place until the FDA reviews its current regulation.

Neutraceutical claimed in its lawsuit that the product “has been safely consumed” for hundreds of years and is not harmful at low ephedrine product levels. The FDA had decided to ban the supplement based on a reverse logic that the product had to be proven safe. The lawsuit effectively argued that it is the FDA’s task to prove that all dosage levels of ephedrine were unsafe. The court agreed with the manufacturer that this assumption could not be proven and, when taken in low doses, less than 10 mg, that agree with the product labeling, ephedrine was not shown to be an “unreasonable or significant risk.”

A group of private researchers claimed that ephedra was the most dangerous herbal product on the market. They collected data from poison control centers. It was not considered to be a drug and could not be controlled the way pharmaceuticals were, and was sold over the counter.

The death in 2003 of 23-year old Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler brought a slew of negative reports on the product that foreshadowed a sharp drop in sales.

Somali pirates hijack Indonesian tugboat and Turkish container ship

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Two more vessels have been hijacked in Somalia. Pirates have captured an Indonesian tugboat with a barge that was working for French oil firm Total and a Turkish container ship.

The Turkish vessel’s seizure was confirmed by a US Fifth Fleet spokesman. MV Bosphorus Prodigy is a 330 ft (100 m) container vessel flagged in Antigua and Barbuda. It is owned and operated by Isko Marine Company based in Istanbul.

The Fifth Fleet could not confirm the tugboat’s seizure, but an anonymous official with Total in Yemen could. He explained the boat and barge were headed to Malaysia from the Yemeni port of Mukalla. He said the crew consisted of both Indonesians and other nationalities, and that the vessels, which had been hired by a subcontractor, were not carrying any oil at the time.

The new hijackings came as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime asked for greater policing in the area by international bodies, and for the signing of agreements that allowed the arresting officer to take pirates back to the officer’s country for prosecution.

“Pirates cannot be keelhauled or forced to walk the plank, nor should they be dumped off the Somali coast,” said the office’s head Antonio Maria Costa. “They need to be brought to justice”.
