World’s oldest living woman dies at age 115

Friday, January 19, 2007

The world’s oldest known woman, Montrealer Julie Winnefred Bertrand, died on Thursday, passing away peacefully in her sleep.

She earned the distinction as the oldest living woman when 116-year-old Elizabeth Bolden of Tennessee, U.S.A. died on December 11, 2006.

Bertrand was born on September 16, 1891 in Coaticook, a town in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, and lived there for the majority of her life. She was the oldest of six children, and never married. She moved to Montreal after the death of her parents, and later moved into a nursing home.

She had never left her sixth-floor room in the nursing home for two years, but unexpectedly, she asked to tour the building the day before she died.

Bertrand will be buried in Coaticook.

Live Independently With Personal Care In Your Own Home

Live Independently With Personal Care In Your Own Home

byalex

With the rising cost of residential care, many elderly people are turning to home care services to provide assistance which allows them to continue living independently. Professional carers can assist with everyday tasks such as preparing meals, dressing and washing or provide much needed social interaction and outings for individuals who live alone.

Personal Care Services

Broadly speaking, carers can provide the following personal care services:

* Assistance with bathing or showering including help getting dry

* Help in dressing and personal grooming

* Toilet assistance

* Medication support – either supervising or administering medication

* Assistance in getting up and going to bed

* Help with motion activities

It may be that you require assistance with only some of the above, or you may need help with all these tasks, but your Home nursing care Bath agency will discuss your requirements in full before providing you with a tailored care plan that outlines the duties and responsibilities of your carer. Reputable care agencies will always try to ensure continuity of care, so you should usually have the same carer each week (except in the case of carer holiday or illness).

Domestic Services

Home nursing care Bath agencies can also provide a domestic service including:

* Meal planning and preparation

* Shopping

* Cooking

* Sitting service

Escort service (to and from activities, hospital appointments and so forth)

Respite/relief services to a live-in carer

Dog walking

Feeding pets

Carrying out cleaning and housework

When you register with a care agency, they will be able to tell you the specific services they provide and advise you how many visits you may need a week to carry out the tasks requested. You can receive care from half an hour a week to a full time live-in service, and this depends on your needs and wishes. Whether you’re looking for someone to get you of bed in the morning and prepare breakfast, or need somebody to take you to your day centre appointment on a weekly basis, there is a Home nursing care Bath service that can help you.

Have Some Company

Carers can even provide company for you, if all you want is someone to sit and chat to over your favourite TV show and a nice cup of tea. They can sit and read to you from the newspaper or even a book of your choice, or you could swap amusing stories! Perhaps you just want the security of someone else at home with you in the evenings – when it’s dark and cold outside it can be easy to feel nervous and insecure even if you’re in your own home. Choose a sitting service, where a carer can spend a few hours keeping you company.

Personal care in your own home is worth its weight in gold and allows you to continue living independently whilst enjoying all the activities you would normally do! By finding a reputable care agency who can provide you with a carer that you enjoy spending time with, your quality of life will be greatly enhanced.

Rachel Weisz wants Botox ban for actors

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

English actress Rachel Weisz thinks that Botox injections should be banned for all actors.

The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in the Mummy movie franchise and for her Academy Award-winning portrayal in The Constant Gardener, feels facial Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.

In an interview with UK’s Harper’s Bazaar, coming out next month, Weisz says, “It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” she claims. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”

Currently living in New York, she also mentions that English women are much less worried about their physical appearance than in the United States. “I love the way girls in London dress,” she claimed. “It’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”

Six killed in UK car crash

Saturday, February 14, 2009

A car crash on the A614 road, in Nottinghamshire, England has killed six people, all of whom are believed to have lived near the scene of the crash.

All six victims died at the scene of the crash, which involved four young adults in a Peugeot 206 and two elderly people, possibly a male and female, who police believe to be in their 60s, in the other car said to be a Ford Fiesta. Rescue workers fought to save the one of the elderly individuals, but were unsuccessful. Both vehicles collided head-on and exploded upon colliding.

Two police officers on traffic patrol discovered the crash, which took place at 23:00 local time (UTC) yesterday. The officers involved were praised by Bruce Cameron, a superintendent for Nottinghamshire Police. “The bodies are very badly burnt and they will have to be identified using dental records. We want to make sure we are absolutely certain as to who was in both cars when the accident happened,” he said.

Local residents say that the A614 has been the scene of a large number of accidents. One resident, Stuart Stonebridge, told The Daily Telegraph that “we only moved here three years ago and there have been a lot of accidents and some fatalities in that time,” while another resident, Janice Gilbody said that “the people of Bilsthorpe will be in shock, horror and disbelief at the young lives lost.”

Gilbody also said that this accident is “yet again another accident on this road.” She then added that the road was dangerous, saying that “it’s a wonder it doesn’t happen more often.”

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police say weather was not a contributing factor.

Over 60 illegal miners die in South African mine fire

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Over 60 miners were killed in an abandoned gold mine shaft near Welkom, in the Free State province of South Africa, after a fire broke out inside the mine.

36 bodies from the Harmony Gold mining company Eland mine shaft were brought up earlier on the weekend from depths up to 1.4 kilometers (1 mi). On Tuesday, 25 more bodies were recovered by other illegal workers.

“We suspect there was a fire on the 18th of May. We never saw any smoke. Over the weekend [30 May] we were informed by other illegal miners that people had died,” said Tom Smith, Chief Operating Officer for Harmony’s South Region, “The bodies are not burnt. It seems more of a case of gas or smoke inhalation. I don’t know if there are any more bodies down there, we just have to wait.”

The workers may have died from poisonous gasses, smoke inhalation, suffocation, cave-ins or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Harmony gold mine will not send anyone in to the mine as the conditions are extremely dangerous and abandoned shafts are without safety equipment. Illegal workers may gain access bypassing security at one mine site, and exit via a series of interconnected underground tunnels many miles away.

Harmony is internationally the fifth largest gold mining company and has bought up old, abandoned mines.

Police were seeking relatives to help identify the bodies, and are instigating an investigation into the circumstances.

Almost 300 “gold pirates” were arrested over the past two weeks at the Eland mine shaft alone. Thousands of illegal workers can be underground, and remain working for weeks and months continuously. “These are ex-miners and unemployed people – we need to target the syndicates,” said Smith.

There are over 4.18 million unemployed in South Africa due to the economic decline, and another 1 million may soon join the ranks.

Susan Shabangu, the minister of mining, extended her condolences.

Welkom, with a population of over 400,000 is located 160 kilometers (99 mi) northeast of Bloemfontein, the provincial capital.

Irish inflation back on the rise

Friday, May 13, 2005

According to new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the annual rate of inflation in Ireland has begun to rise again after a period of decline. Annualised inflation is now running at 2.2%, up from 2.1% in March.

The figures are derived from the Consumer Price Index which is monitored by the CSO. Despite the increase, inflation remains significantly below the figure for recent years. Annualised inflation peaked at 5.1% in February 2003.

The major contributor to the rise was the cost of heating and housing with the Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels group rising 10.6% in the past 12 months – with 2% of that rise in the last month alone.

When broken down more the section marked Energy Products showed a massive 5.3% rise in the past month alone.

This sharp rise in energy costs was offset somewhat by decreases (over the past 12 months) in the following groups:

  • Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.5%)
  • Clothing and Footwear (-2.8%)
  • Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (-1.4%)
  • Communications (-0.2%)
  • Miscellaneous Goods & Services (-1.3%).

According to the CSO the Consumer Price Index is made up of over 55,000 prices consisting of 613 headings which cover over 1,000 different items.
