Inspectors close Chicago landmark Healthy Food restaurant after finding dead mouse in cooler

Saturday, April 2, 2005

Chicago city inspectors closed the landmark Lithuanian restaurant Healthy Food on Thursday, after finding mouse feces on the meat slicer and cutting board, and a dead mouse in the cooler.

The restaurant has operated at 3236 S. Halsted, on the south side of the city in the Bridgeport neighborhood, since the 1930s.

Wikinews reporter David Vasquez placed a call to the restaurant to inquire if they were open. The call was answered by a woman who said, “No, we’re closed. There’s some technical difficulties. I’m sorry. Thank you for calling.” A second phone could be heard ringing in the background.

Streets and Sanitation spokesman Matt Smith told the Chicago Sun-Times, “To reopen, they’re going to have to present us with a revamped game plan for not only rodent control but also housekeeping, they’ll have to make all the corrections that our inspectors point out,” he continued, “and pass a very stringent follow-up inspection.”

Patrons have praised the restaurant’s sauerkraut soup and other dishes over the years. Before it was closed, the restaurant had a lot of traffic from the nearby Cook County Circuit Court. The restaurant was once voted “Best Ethnic Eastern European Restaurant in Chicago”, according to New City.

Over 10,000 attend Gallipoli dawn service for ANZAC Day centenary

Monday, April 27, 2015

A crowd of over 10,000 people attended the dawn service on Saturday at Gallipoli, Turkey for the 100th anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops there in 1915. The solemn remembrance ceremony was held at the site of the original Gallipoli landings, now known as Anzac Cove.

The Gallipoli Campaign of the First World War is remembered as a failed attack in which thousands of lives were lost for little to no gain for either side. The campaign killed 45,000 Allied and 86,000 Turkish troops.

Attendees at the dawn service included Prince Charles, the Prime Minister of Australia, and the Prime Minister of New Zealand.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s speech later in the day emphasised the importance of the day to Australians. “Like every generation since, we are here on Gallipoli because we believe the Anzacs represented Australians at their best. Because they rose to their challenges, we believe it is a little easier for us to rise to ours. Their example helps us to be better than we would otherwise be”, he said.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key at dawn described Gallipoli as a symbol of the highest ideals of Australians and New Zealanders “especially when they work side by side in the face of adversity”.

Prince Charles stirred emotions by reading extracts from a serviceman’s diary. The diary entry, by Company Quartermaster Sergeant Benjamin Leane, was addressed to his wife and was written hours before the first Gallipoli landing.

The centenary milestone of Anzac Day also drew a Turkish security force of 3700, both police and paramilitary. Attendees entered past six security checkpoints.

A record 120,000 people also attended services at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to commemorate the centenary.

Factors To Consider When Buying Truck Wheels And Tires

Factors To Consider When Buying Truck Wheels And Tires

byAlma Abell

The truck wheels and tires can both have a major impact on the performance, handling and driving experience. Truck wheels are available in many different shapes and sizes. The tires that you put on the wheels can also impact performance. When it comes to buying wheels and tires for your truck, there are many factors that you need to consider. Many people often forget important points while buying wheels and tires, and just go along with whatever looks good. Buying the wrong tires or wheels for your truck could cause a range of problems: it can lead to increased fuel consumption, cause problems in handling, and damage the suspension of your vehicle. These are just some of the many factors that you should consider when buying wheels and tires for your truck.

Size

Ideally, you should buy the same size of tires and wheels that were originally fitted on the car. In an effort to make their trucks look better, many people invest in truck wheels and tires that are slightly bigger than the recommended size. While they may look good, bigger sized tires could cause a lot of problems. For starters, they can cause a reduction in speeds, because the engine will have to produce more power in order to make the wheel turn. Bigger wheels and tires can also cause your speedometer to give inaccurate readings. That’s because the wheel covers a greater area with every rotation, while the sensor is designed for a smaller wheel.

Make

Alloy wheels are generally more popular than steel plated wheels (stock-fitted in the car). Alloy wheels are lighter and provide better performance. However, there are certain issues with buying alloy wheels too. For starters, many people often purchase the cheap alloy rims that are manufactured in China. These rims have virtually the same weight as compared to your ordinary steel plated wheels.

These rims are also an inch bigger than the conventional wheels, which can cause problems in driving. In fact, some people end up buying alloy rims that are heavier in weight as compared to their own wheels! It won’t be long before your suspension will begin to make clanking noises. Remember, when it comes to buying truck wheels and tires, the make and model plays a very important role. Make sure you buy rims that are manufactured for your car by a reputable company.

Budget

How much money are you willing to pay for new wheels and tires? While you can save some money if you choose secondhand wheels or tires, it is generally advised that you buy new in order to save yourself the hassle. The new tires will easily last you a couple of years!

Gordon Brown announces new powers for UK Treasury

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced today that an Order in Council will be made tomorrow empowering the British Treasury to prevent the funding of those suspected of planning terror. Use will be made of forensic accounting and of methods similar to those employed by the code breakers at Bletchley Park. With the help of computing power to discover relations between bits of information, they cracked the German Enigma code during WWII. Gordon Brown ranks the impact of forensic accounting at the present time with the use of fingerprinting in the 19th century and of DNA in the late 20th Century.

Speaking to Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs, Brown defined the most dangerous sources of finance for terrorists as being charities, money service businesses and financial transactions such as bureaux de change, cheque cashers and money remitters. There will be a new licensing system requiring firms to keep more detailed records of transactions. Tougher action against non-compliance is promised. New proposals about money laundering are being prepared.

The new Order will empower the Treasury, for the first time, to use closed source evidence from classified intelligence to freeze the assets of suspects. A special advocate procedure will be put in place to ensure “fair and consistent hearing of cases”. If evidence shows it to be necessary, it is Brown’s opinion that suspects should be held, without a charge being brought, for more than the present 28 days.

The Government has been defeated once already in Parliament in an attempt, in the Terrorism Act 2006, to increase the present 28 days of detention without charge to 90 days. Public opinion was very divided on that proposal and feelings in Parliament ran high with talk of a police state and of the Government pandering to public opinion.

Tanker crash kills driver, spills diesel fuel in Vermont, US

Thursday, May 31, 2007

A tanker truck travelling Northbound on Route 30 with 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel hit a guardrail, veered off the road and overturned into the West River near Newfane, Vermont. The West River is a tributary of the Connecticut River. The driver was ejected and killed, while the truck’s tank ruptured.

The truck came to rest partially submerged in the river on its right side and immediately began leaking its payload. The driver has been identified as 30-year-old Eduard Lashway of Guilford. The vehicle was owned by local company Barrows & Fisher Oil Co. of Brattleboro.

HazMat crews and Brattleboro Fire Department divers worked with booms to try to contain the oil leaking into the river. Route 30 was also closed in both directions, and the river closed to water traffic. A total of 100 gallons of fuel leaked into the river but was ultimately contained by HazMat teams.

WMUR reached an unidentified person at Barrows & Fisher, who refused to identify the then-unknown driver and said he had no comment on the accident.

The accident is under investigation.

Writing A Memoir: Do It Yourself Or Hire A Ghostwriter?

Writing A Memoir: Do It Yourself Or Hire A Ghostwriter?

Submitted by: Lisa Silverman

Some time ago, I was hired by a woman with a harrowing family story to tell. She desperately wanted to share her tale, believing that it would expose truths and help other people, but she recognized that her writing was not at a professional book author s level. So I agreed to ghostwrite the manuscript.

I had never done such a job before–editing books was my thing, not writing them–and I soon came to regret it. The woman lived far from me, so I never met her, and she had a difficult time understanding the level of detail I needed from her to effectively turn the events of her life into a potential book. The experience led me to ask: Can a deeply personal story be told in a deeply personal, affecting, true way–by someone who didn t live it?

A recent poll showed that 81 percent of Americans believe they have a book in them. I d bet that at least half those people have a memoir in mind. The genre has exploded over the past decade or so (though I m still not sure how it differs from a good old-fashioned autobiography Does anyone write those anymore?). But, of course, not everyone with a poignant story to tell has the writing skills to tell it effectively. So many turn to a ghostwriter for help.

If you fall into this category of aspiring author, keep this wisdom in mind that I gleaned from my own experience:

* Shop around. Make sure your prospective ghostwriter understands your story, not just knowing the events, but really getting what you want to say on a deeper level. To achieve such a connection, you must be completely honest and open with him/her. Hire someone in your geographical area if possible, so you can meet in person.

* Draw up a contract. Essential every time you work with another writer, even if it s your best friend. Especially if it s your best friend. Avoid any future conflicts about credit on the book jacket, whether the ghostwriter gets royalties or a flat fee, what happens if you decide it s not working out, etc. Then you can focus on telling your story together.

* Tell your ghostwriter everything–and I mean everything. Reveal even things you don t want to reveal in the book. Just as a character needs a back story, the ghostwriter needs context to make the story feel true. Trust is essential between you. Think of your ghostwriter as your therapist. Nothing leaves the room (except what goes in the book).

* Distance yourself from your story. Get into your ghostwriter s head and realize that he/she doesn t know what you know. Details are essential to effective writing, so while your daughter may not be a major character in your memoir, and while you may know every detail about your daughter, the ghostwriter doesn t. Every character in a good book is richly drawn. So even if she s in only one scene of the book, talking on the phone, tell your ghostwriter the color exactly how she acts when she s on the phone–not to mention the color of her eyes, her best friend s name you get the idea.

The bottom line is that Brechtian, emotionally distanced memoirs don t sell, unless you re a literary genius on the level of Brecht. So if you decide to seek ghostwriting help to create your manuscript, make sure your ghostwriter can feel close and connected to you and your story. Make sure the book in your head can be channeled through them onto the page.

The Peace Tax Seven, who are campaigning to have the 10 per cent of their taxes which go to Britain’s defence budget diverted to non-military uses, have had their case rejected by a High Court judge.

The judicial review was called for under article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights which guarantees freedom ‘to manifest one’s religion or beliefs’ and which was made a part of British law in 1998. The Convention includes the right to conscientious objection and the campaigners claim that this gives them the right not to pay other people to go to war on their behalf.

Their statement to the court said: “We want to make a positive contribution to society by paying our tax in full. We object in conscience to paying others to kill on our behalf, but current tax policy forces us to do just that.”

The courtroom had to be enlarged to make room for supporters and the judge listened to the case for three hours.

Roy Prockter, an accountant and campaign member as well as a Quaker, said that the judge told them that “our case has no possibility of being resolved in the British courts”. According to the Guardian, the judge suggested they take the case to Strasbourg. Roy said that the members were going to take time for reflection as they awaited the written judgment from the judge.
