2007 Ig Nobel Prize winners announced

Friday, October 5, 2007

The winners of the 2007 Ig Nobel Prize have been announced. The awards, given out every early October since 1991 by the Annals of Improbable Research, are a parody of the Nobel Prize, which are awards given out in several fields. The awards are given to achievements that, “first make people laugh, and then make them think.” They were presented at Harvard University’s Sanders Theater.

Ten awards have been presented, each given to a different field. The winners are:

  • Medicine: Brian Witcombe, of Gloucestershire Royal NHS Foundation Trust, UK, and Dan Meyer, who studied the health consequences of sword swallowing.
  • Physics: A team from the USA and Chile, who made a study about how cloth sheets become wrinkled.
  • Biology: Dr Johanna van Bronswijk of the Netherlands, for carrying out a census of creatures that live in people’s beds.
  • Chemistry: Mayu Yamamoto, from Japan, for creating a method of extracting vanilla fragrance and flavouring from cow dung.
  • Linguistics: A team from the University of Barcelona, who discovered that rats cannot tell the difference between Japanese and Dutch when spoken backwards.
  • Literature: Glenda Browne of Blue Mountains, Australia, for her study on how the word “The” confuses people when they try to put things in alphabetical order.
  • Peace: The US Air Force Wright Laboratory for trying to develop a “Gay bomb” that would turn enemy soldiers homosexual.
  • Nutrition: Brian Wansink of Cornell University for his investigation into the limits of the human appetite, by using a self-refilling “bottomless” bowl of soup.
  • Economics: Kuo Cheng Hsieh of Taiwan, for patenting a machine that catches bank robbers by dropping a net on top of them.
  • Aviation: A team from the National University of Quilmes, Argentina, for discovering that impotency drugs can help hamsters recover from jet lag.

Interview with Liz Mumby, independent candidate in Australian by-election for the Victorian state electorate of Altona

Thursday, February 4, 2010

With a state by-election coming up in Victoria, Australia, many minor parties and independent candidates will be looking to gain a seat in the Legislative Assembly. Liz Mumby is one of the independents.

“I am a medical sales professional, a wife and mother and a small business owner,” says Mumby, the Division of Altona. “I don’t come from a political background, I live in the real world.” She argues that “we should not limit the debate to public transport issues just because the retiring member was the Minister for Public Transport.”

Wikinews reporter Patrick Gillett held an exclusive email interview with Mrs. Mumby.

How Does Isdn Work?

How Does Isdn Work?

By Michiel Van Kets

ISDN is a digital telephone line that is primarily used for Business telephones.

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a system of digital phone connections which is compatible with the existing (analog) telephone system. ISDN customers can use their phones to make conventional (analog, dialup) voice connections. In addition, ISDN customers can make high-speed digital data connections with other ISDN-capable telephone customers.

ISDN allows data to be transmitted and received around the world using end-to-end digital connectivity. With ISDN, voice and data are carried by 64Kbps bearer channels (B channels). Multiple B channels can cooperate to provide higher data rates. Common ISDN installations can easily be configured to use two (2) B channels, providing a true data rate of 128Kbps. In all ISDN installations, a data channel (D channel) handles control signalling at 16 kbps or 64 kbps, depending on the service type.

Typical applications include call centres and offices requiring large numbers of multiple lines or extensions. ISDN provides Business Phone users with digital access to switched voice and data over a single integrated network connection.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y35xrSJ11R0[/youtube]

ISDN 10/20/30 is a premium business grade service for all local, national, mobile, international and special service calls.

ISDN 10/20/30 provides http://pcworld.about.com/od/networkin1/Options-Multiply-for-Small-Bus.htm : significant cost savings as multiple services can be delivered down a single copper pair of wires faster. Call dialling and disconnection is faster allowing for increased efficiency and the indial feature allows you to direct dial extensions rather than go via a switchboard or receptionist.

ISDN comes in two basic configurations. ISDN 2 Basic Rate (BRI) or ISDN 10/20/30 Primary rate (PRI)

ISDN 2 which is suitable for Business that require 2 or multiples of 2 phone lines. e.g. 2, 4, 6 or 8 phone lines.

ISDN 10 20 30 is known as a Primary Rate PRA Digital ISDN service whereas ISDN 2 is known as a Basic Rate Service. A ISDN Business Phone Line is a digital service that provides enhanced functionality via Digital Transmission and can re place conventional analogue telephone lines. It is available in configurations of 2, 10, 20 or 30 channels. ISDN 10/20/30 Business Phones can provide up to 30 x 64kbps channels making it suitable for small or large applications.

A Direct In-Dial is a range of 100 numbers allocated to your ISDN service. It is sometimes referred to as 100 Number range. Direct In-Dial ranges are always in blocks of 100 and are only available on ISDN2 and ISDN 10/20/30 services. In-dial ranges always start with 00 as the last two digits and end with 99 as the last two digits of the range. Multiple In-Dial Ranges can be supplied on a single ISDN service on Telaustralia Telstra and Optus services.

Even though you may only have 2/4/6 lines you can have 100 numbers and this allows you to allocate a direct dial number for any individual or department with your company. This allows you to efficiently manage your calls by directly internal and direct calls to the desired locations while retaining the ability to direct certain advertised numbers via a receptionist or call centre.

With a Direct In-Dial range you are also have access to Extension Level billing which allows you to bill calls out via each extension of the 100 number range. Typical application for this would be serviced offices where the calls need to be metered or call costs from a particular extension billed back to a customer or department.

Direct In-Dial is available on http://www.telaustralia.com.au/landlines/isdn-2-phone-lines : ISDN 2 Phone Lines and ISDN 10/2030 and ISDN Multi Line.

Manitoba volunteers go to war against Red River flooding

Monday, April 6, 2009

Over 1,600 volunteers registered to help build approximately 65,000 of the 500,000 sandbags to create dikes 20.5 feet (6.2 meters) high to protect the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the war against the Red River of the North flood.

700 volunteers answered at the rural municipality of St. Andrews alone. Once sandbags are filled for West St. Paul, St. Andrews, and Selkirk, then frozen culverts must be cleared.

The height of the river is expected to be Thursday, and predictions are that it will be less than Flood of the Century of 1997. There is no precipitation in the forecast, and snow in the province should be melted by the end of the week.

“The fear right now is we have to get that ice out of the river. The Amphibex [Excavators] are still working and breaking the ice apart, and everyday we buy with the warm weather and the current, it is thinning the ice down a bit, so when it does start to move, the better chance it’ll move right out into the lake,” said Paul Guyder, the emergency coordinator for the RMs of St. Andrews and St. Clements.

“I feel that we’ve done everything humanly possible to get ready,” said Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, “But … there are fallibilities with human behaviour. We can take every preventative measure as human beings possible and we can still get Mother Nature proving again she is superior.”

Communities with ring diking will partially or fully close their dikes at the beginning of the week. Provincial officials are considering opening the Red River Floodway gates around mid-week before ice is fully melted.

Ice jams could cause flooding within the city, however opening the gates could spare neighbourhood flooding when the river rises to the estimated 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) height. The province does have back up plans for dealing with ice jams within the city if they do occur. The unpredictability of ice jams and the ensuing water level rise may cause neighbourhood flooding. The city is raising dikes where the river has jammed with ice in the past such as on tight curves and past bridges. Likewise there are excavators and backhoes positioned at these points.

Vulnerable neighbourhoods on the river banks have been reinforced with sandbag dikes at vulnerable areas from the massive volunteer effort over the weekend. Guyader feels no more extra volunteers are needed, however volunteers are still being asked to leave their names and number in case of unpredicted need. Existing personnel will assess roads, and help with clean up.

Approximately 400 of the 800 people who evacuated the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation have returned to their homes.

Former Premier, Dufferin Roblin, brought forward the floodway as a protection for Winnipeg residents and economy following the 1950 Red River Flood. The Red River floodway, “Duff’s Ditch” was finally finished in 1968, and its floodway gates have been opened 20 times saving Winnipeg from an estimated CA$10 billion in damages. The floodway expansion began in 2005 at a price of $665 million.

Polish and Chinese experts have come to survey the Red River Floodway, and Dennis Walaker, mayor of Fargo, North Dakota recognises the need for Red River flood defences down river. “Every town that you drive by from the Canadian line up to Winnipeg is either elevated or ring-diked,” said Walaker.

High Pressure Vaneaxial Ventilators

High Pressure Vaneaxial Ventilators

Industrial Pressure Blower Co. has devloped a new high pressure small vaneaxial fan that finally resolves the problem of boosting air flow in long ventilation ducts of today’s large residential houses. For a long time the efficient ventilation of remote rooms in the large houses could be done only with two independent air supply sources (like a furnace). Ventilating ductwork in contemporary large houses becomes so long and elaborated that even a high pressure furnace fan couldn’t generate enough static pressure to blow through the whole length of such a duct. The existing low pressure booster duct fans, even though compact enough to be installed in-line in the house ventilation ductwork, still do not provide enough booster pressure / airflow. The usual solution to this problem was installation of two independent furnaces with different air ducts, which is rather expensive option.A new high pressure (up to 1.5″ WG) small vaneaxial Series VA fan is an ideal booster fan for prolonged ducts. Unlike inline centrifugal ventilator, that also generates rather high pressure, the air comes out not from a peripheral outlet ring area, but distributes evenly across its outlet opening like in true axial blowers. The other advantages of VA Series vaneaxial ventilators is their intrinsic spark-resistant construction because of all-aluminum construction; quiet operation of true vaneaxial design; lower energy consumption due to efficient wheel design.Eight different sizes of High Pressure Compact Vaneaxial Fan from 6″ DIA to 10″ DIA offer wide performance range for any ventilation duct design. Direct drive design ensures long live, maintenance-free operation. Explosion proof motors are available too, as well as sliding dampers, various mounting options, additional sound isolation.Another high pressure in-line fan developed by Industrial Pressure Blower Co. is its Mixed Flow Fan. Mixed Flow fans are an excellent choice for return air, supply, or general ventilation applications where low sound is critical. As compared to similarly sized tubular centrifugals and vane axials, a mixed flow fan will be 5-20 dB quieter! In addition, the mixed flow wheel is extremely efficient and will cut down on operating expenses ventilating.com fanblower.com highpressureblower.net industrialblowerfan.com industrialfanblower.net industrialfanblower.com pressureblower.net northernindustrialsupplycompany.com industrialpressureblower.com tenderall.com chicagoblowercanada.com cbblower.com buffaloblower.com buffalofan.com nis-co.com canadianblower.com olegsystems.com canadablower.com abbblower.com acmefan.net industrialblower.net fansandblowers.net americanblower.net barryfan.com cincinnatifan.net canadafans.com barryfan.net greenheck.net pennbarry.net pennfan.net tcffan.co. Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Sunday, March 26, 2006

Buffalo, New York —For the second weekend in a row, demonstrators protested the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal on the proposed site.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a proposed hotel by Savarino Construction Services Corporation and is designed by architect Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group. It is to be placed on the corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo and will require the demolition of at least five properties (1109-1121 Elmwood).

The proposal also required that all five properties, including 605 Forest, be rezoned to a “C-2” zone, or a “special development plan.” The rezoning was passed by Buffalo’s Common Council on March 21, 2006.

Russell Smith, owner of the Six Nation’s Gift Shop at 1121 Elmwood, also participated in the protest.

“I am a Native American and we opened a Native American gift shop and we are just brand new [and just] opened. Having started out a business for the first time, and it the only Native American shop in the city, and I do not see the use of any hotel, especially at this district. The Elmwood Strip is pretty well established. Some of these people have been here a long while you know and they’re [Savarino Construction] disrupting their livelihood,” said Smith to Wikinews.

When Smith was asked if he was going to be in any of the shops in the new hotel he replied, “we don’t have the option of getting into the hotel or any of the shops that are going to be there. We haven’t [had] any idea that they [Savarino] were even planning to tear these buildings down to put a hotel here until we had moved in. I think thats a little unfair.”

Former City of Buffalo Mayor Anthony Masiello was asked to sign the petition to stop the hotel when he walked by, but he declined saying, “I respect what you are doing, but I am for the hotel.”

Despite the cold weather, at least 45 people showed up to walk the picket line.

For the moment, no further protests have been scheduled, pending the final decision on the hotel proposal by the city’s Planning Board which meets Tuesday, March 28, 2006. The meeting begins at 8:00am and will be held in room 902 on the 9th floor of City Hall in downtown Buffalo.

On Saturday morning several individuals attended a meeting with a lawyer to see what could be done, if anything, about the proposal and about Hans Mobius, former Buffalo mayoral candidate and owner of the properties to be demolished at 1109-1121 Elmwood.

One of the attendees, Nancy Pollina, co-owner of Don Apparel with Patty Morris, stated that “there is a case” but that she is likely unable to afford the large attorney’s fees. Pollina reports that she is looking into a “legal fund.”

Some of the affected are considering going to the New York State Supreme Court pro se to seek an injunction.

Some tenants of Mobius’s buildings have accused him of being a “slumlord” and claim that he “intentionally neglected” his properties with the intention of selling. Mobius, who has owned the properties for about 20 years, tried in 1995 to sell them to a developer who wanted to build a Walgreens Drugstore on the same site as the proposed hotel.

Mobius is expected to appear in housing Court on April 11, 2006. He has not returned any phone calls from Wikinews.

Minor tears found in Gordon Brown’s retina

Monday, October 12, 2009

The British government has said that eyesight tests reveal Prime Minister Gordon Brown has two minor tears in the retina of his right eye.

Prime Minister Brown went to the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, England. A series of eyesight tests revealed that there were two small tears in his right retina, but no other deterioration in his eyesight.

Downing Street in Westminster has said that despite these results, Mr. Brown will not be undergoing any further operations. They commented: “This summer Mr Brown had his annual eye check-up which was fine. Later he had his retina checked. After examinations, surgeons found that the retina had two minor tears. However, as there has been no further deterioration, and no change in his eyesight, they decided against further operations. Yesterday [Friday] Mr. Brown visited Moorfields Hospital as part of regular checks on his eyes and this check was also fine. Mr. Brown wants to thank the doctors and staff of the NHS particularly Moorfields Hospital. Were there to be any change, he would of course make a further statement.”

Gordon is already blind in his left eye after a rugby-related accident during his teenage years. The announce made earlier this week comes roughly two weeks after he made an appearance on The Andrew Marr Show on BBC One as a guest on September 27, 2009. He was given some medical questions from Andrew Marr about his health, including if his eyes were OK, and if he took prescription painkillers, while on the air. As a result, the BBC received several hundred complaints from viewers.

Editor Barney Jones made an apology. In a statement he said: “We felt that with a general election looming and with former and current cabinet ministers warning of electoral defeat unless the party turned round its current position, a robust interview centred on the economy and the Prime Minister’s leadership was appropriate.

“The former Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, suggested this month that health might be a reason for the Prime Minister to stand down and within the context of a long interview about policy it was reasonable also to ask Mr Brown about his health. The issue of his health and whether it affects his ability to perform the onerous job of leading the party and the country was pertinent, and has been raised with other Prime Ministers in the past.”

Things To Consider Before Buying A Used Engine St. Paul Mn

Things To Consider Before Buying A Used Engine St. Paul Mn

byadmin

There are times when your car may develop engine problems that force you to have the entire engine replaced. This happens often when you drive a car without engine oil and the engine ceases to run. Under such situations, it is impossible to change parts and restore the engine to its normal working condition.

Assuming that you have no option but to replace the entire engine, you must weigh your options between buying a new engine and going for a Used Engine St. Paul MN. There are pros and cons of using either of the engines. If you decide to buy a new engine, you will have to part with more money because they are mostly expensive. On the other hand, you may opt for a Used Engine St. Paul MN which is relatively cheaper but with other probable problems.

Before you decide to choose either of the above options, you need to look at many things. They include your budget for the project as well as the value of the car in question among many other things. Buying used engines is a complex affair that needs the help of a professional mechanic to screen the engine for any problems.

Among the things to look at when buying a used engine include the mileage and the overall mechanical condition of the engine. The seller always decides on the price of an engine by looking at its capacity and mileage. An engine that has done several miles will cost less than one that is yet to cover any distance. The mileage is a reason that determines even the price of a used car.

In some cases, it is advisable to have the Used Engine St. Paul MN fitted into your car so that you can drive off knowing everything is well. A good reputation is very important when dealing with used items and it is not any different when dealing with engines.

It is always advisable to buy from dealers who have many engines in their inventory to choose from. That way, you do not have to worry if one does not work because they can easily replace it. Other factors that you need to consider when buying Used Transmission is the cost. You should start by finding out the cost of a new one so that you can bargain for a better deal.
