Astronomer tells Wikinews about discovery of closest black hole known so far

Friday, May 22, 2020

A study published in journal Astronomy & Astrophysics last month reported astronomers from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and elsewhere discovered a black hole in the Telescopium constellation. The study stated the black hole is about 1010 ± 195 light years (310 ± 60 parsec) away from the Solar System, meaning it is the nearest known black hole from the Earth. The nearest previously known black hole — V616 Mon — the study noted was usually estimated at more than 3000 light years away.

The black hole described in the study is located in the HR 6819 stellar system of Telescopium constellation, making it the first system visible to the naked eye to contain a black hole. HR 6819 contains two stars, and they are visible from the Southern Hemisphere. The astronomers started observing the system in 1999. Initially, they thought it was just a binary system, consisting of two stars. However, upon examination, the researchers concluded there was a third unseen object in the system. One of the two stars in the HR 6819 system is close to the black hole and orbits the black hole in just 40.333 ± 0.004 days.

This newly discovered black hole does not have an accretion disk. A black hole forms an accretion disk when a significant amount of matter orbits the black hole, as depicted in the image. Accretion disks often emit electromagnetic radiation. Since this black hole does not have an accretion disk, researchers had to rely on the gravitational effect of the black hole on the nearby star in order to discover it.

Researchers used the binary mass function to conclude the black hole had a mass of at least 4.2 M? (Solar masses; 1 Solar mass = mass of the Sun). Its companion star, which orbits the black hole in about 40 days, is classified as a B3 III star. The outer star is classified as a Be star. Be stars rotate very quickly around their axes. Since the outer star rotates so rapidly, the star is not exactly spherical, but instead oblate, bulged at its equator, forming a gas disk around the equator.

The research suggested HR 6819 was very similar to another system LB-1. The HR 6819 system is estimated to be between 15–75 million years old (myr). The inner star has estimated mass of at least 6.3 ± 0.7 M?. Using the mass and the speed at which the inner star rotates, the researchers concluded the black hole had an estimated mass of 5.0 ± 0.4 M?. Researcher and co-author of the study Thomas Rivinius told Wikinews the inner star and the black hole are closer than the Sun and the Earth (1au; 150 million km; 93 million miles).

The researchers dedicated the paper to Stanislav Štefl, one of the fellow researchers who died in a car accident in 2014 in Santiago, Chile.

Wikinews caught up with Thomas Rivinius to discuss about this discovery.

Dermal Fillers Plump Sunken Facial Features}

Dermal Fillers Plump Sunken Facial Features}

Submitted by: Abigail Aaronson

It’s no secret that as we age our faces tend to lose volume and skin elasticity weakens, leaving us with wrinkles, baggy eyes, and hollow cheeks. We’re also at the mercy of genetics, and some individuals may begin seeing these signs of ageing prematurely.

It isn’t pleasant to see a hollow, tired face staring back at you in the mirror every morning; fortunately, dermal fillers can help fill in sunken facial features, building up your face and confidence at the same time.

Sunken facial features are a result of a loss of facial fat. As we age, the face tends to lose collagen and fat that keeps us young and fresh-looking. The skin then sinks into the depressions created by this loss. This mostly happens in the cheek area, but the effects can be seen throughout the entire face.

Hollows beneath the cheeks can make you appear gaunt and tired. It also can contribute to the appearance of dark, sunken circles below the eyes. Traditional surgical procedures, such as facelifts or brow lifts, are often unable to address facial problems that develop in these areas. They also cannot help create volume where it is needed, but rather merely tighten any loose skin that is also a consequence of fat loss.

Dermal fillers can successfully build up sunken facial features, giving you a youthful, healthy glow once again. They are also less invasive than surgical procedures, have minimal recovery time, and often cost a fraction of the price.

There are many different types of dermal filler available on the market. Some are aimed at addressing only certain areas, while others can be used on a variety of features from the cheeks to the lips. A board-certified plastic surgeon can help you choose the proper filler and make recommendations.

The results of dermal filler treatments are generally temporary. The majority of products last between five and eight months; however, there are many new fillers that may have much longer lasting results, up to one or two years.

There are few risks and complications involved. The procedure is usually done in-office with no anesthesia. The surgeon will clean the area to be treated and inject a small amount of filler until even and smooth. Often it is necessary to over-inject the area initially due to the body reabsorbing some types of filler.

Afterwards, the area may appear a bit red or sore, but this will dissipate within hours. Patients can return to normal activity immediately. Possible, but rare side effects include bleeding, allergic reaction, and extended swelling or soreness.

You don’t have to wake up to a gaunt face every morning. Dermal fillers can bring back the vibrancy of youth for a small cost and minimal investment. With so many different types available today on the market, there is a good chance you can find one to suit your individual needs and aesthetic preferences. Be sure to choose a qualified and skilled cosmetic surgeon to administer any injections.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro injured in Preakness, does not finish race

Saturday, May 20, 2006

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, sent as the post-time odds-on favorite in this year’s Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, breaks down in the opening stretch of the race, shattering any chance of a Triple Crown winner this year. Bernardini, the 12-1 4th choice out of 9, ends up winning this year’s Preakness, stopping the clock at 1:54.65. Following up 5 1/4 lengths behind was Sweetnorthernsaint, sent to the post at 8-1, and Hemingway’s Key at 29-1, six lengths further back.

According to Dr. Larry Bramlage, the on-call veterinarian for the American Association of Equine Practitioners, Barbaro’s injury was “significant” and “would require major stabilizing surgery.” Barbaro’s injury effectively ended the horse’s racing career.

Bernardini, a colt by A.P. Indy out of Cara Rafaela, by Quiet American, was bred and is owned by the Darley Stable of Sheikh Mohammed, is trained by Tom Albertrani, and was ridden to victory by Javier Castellano. Today’s Preakness marks the first Preakness win for jockey Javier Castellano, who previously rode Ghostzapper to a win in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Preakness was only Bernardini’s 4th career start.

Bernardini paid $27.80 on a $2 win bet. The $2 Exacta of Bernardini and Sweetnorthernsaint (8-7) paid $171.60, the $1 Trifecta with Hemingway’s Key in third (8-7-3) paid $1,956.40, and the $1 Superfecta with 2nd-favorite Brother Derek (8-7-3-6) paid $11,151.20.

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

Buffalo, New York —Buffalo, New York developers have been stymied by old real estate deeds.

The prospective Elmwood Village Hotel may be scuttled and businesses now located there may be forced to move.

Frustrations over property located in an area once known as “Granger Estates” circulate around a clause in the original deeds over land divided by then-owner Erastus Granger in the early 1800’s.

According to the documents, “no business establishment of any kind whatsoever” shall ever be constructed on the property, and they shall forever be exclusively for residential use only. Also prohibited are barns, farms and stables.

Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies, the prospective hotel developer, announced that his legal research team found the restrictions on properties located between 1109 and 1121 Elmwood Avenue which also stated in part that “no businesses, hospitality establishment of anykind whatsoever” shall ever be permitted to be built on the property.

Savarino, whom is expected to contest the restrictions, said that his company could have ignored the findings, but that, “we can’t risk the future of a multimillion-dollar project on the hope they wouldn’t be discovered. Our opponents would have had a field day if they’d surfaced after the fact.”

Savarino said his attorneys and researchers are anticipated to determine “exactly what weight the restrictions carry and if there’s a way for the courts to negate them.”

Existing businesses are also jeopardized.

Hans Mobius, owner of some of the restricted properties upon which a carriage house is built, said, he wasn’t aware of any restrictions, and “never had a reason to research the deed and title documents.” He confidently added that, “the lawyers can get this taken care of.”

Other threatened businesses include Don Apparel, H.O.D. Tattoo, Forest Plaza Art Gallery and Allentown Music.

Greek opposition party’s members vote for president

Saturday, November 10, 2007

PASOK (Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement) party members and voters will decide tomorrow for party’s president, in a wide election throughout Greece. Almost one million party members, voters and friends of PASOK will gather in selected ballot boxes in all the main cities of the country to vote for party’s leader, after the defeat of September 16, 2007, in the national elections.

The three candidates for PASOK’s presidency are the current president and president of the Socialist International George Papandreou, the MP and former Minister Dr. Evangelos Venizelos and the former Secretary of the party Kostas Skandalides. Until now, opinion polls show that Papandreou leads the presidential race with around 2%–6% difference from Venizelos, but political analysts remain unsure in their predictions about the result of the elections.

Yesterday, the candidates concluded their pre-election campaigns with public speeches in Athens, Thessaloniki and Kos respectively. Mr. Papandreou delivered a speech in Peristeri, west Athens while Mr. Venizelos organized a political fiesta with over 5,000 supporters of his, in his hometown Thessaloniki. Skandalides ended his campaign in his birthplace, the island of Kos.

PASOK, founded by the popular politician Andreas Papandreou in 1974, was in government from 1981 to 1989 and from 1993 to 2004, dominating most of the modern Greek politics. Last September, the party was defeated in the 2007 parliamentary elections from the conservative New Democracy. Since then criticism and challenge on George Papandreou’s leadership, by prominent members of PASOK such as Mr. Venizelos, has been increased

A Word On Rhinoplasty And Tummy Tucks

A Word On Rhinoplasty And Tummy Tucks

A Word on Rhinoplasty and Tummy Tucks

by

Terry Bayer

Rhinoplasty and tummy tucks are two of the most popular cosmetic surgeries today in Los Angeles. People often undergo these procedures to improve self-image because these may provide better looking facial and abdominal figures, respectively.

Rhinoplasty entails the re-shaping of a person s nose. It may involve the open or closed technique, which entails incisions on a person s nostrils to manipulate its existing shape. Tummy tuck on the other hand requires eliminating body fats and cutting loose skin from the abdomen. The surgery is said to sculpt a person s tummy and give it a better-looking shape.

If you re considering the procedures, think over the cost it entails. Los Angeles surgeon s make up to 80% of the operation s costs and you may need to pay the surgeon s fees upfront. If you don t have the budget and you re considering charging it on your credit card you have to be aware of the interest this may incur. For other important concerns, read the following points.

Rachel Weisz wants Botox ban for actors

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

English actress Rachel Weisz thinks that Botox injections should be banned for all actors.

The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in the Mummy movie franchise and for her Academy Award-winning portrayal in The Constant Gardener, feels facial Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.

In an interview with UK’s Harper’s Bazaar, coming out next month, Weisz says, “It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” she claims. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”

Currently living in New York, she also mentions that English women are much less worried about their physical appearance than in the United States. “I love the way girls in London dress,” she claimed. “It’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”

All About Your Teeth

All About Your Teeth

By Patrick Boswell

Baby’s first tooth is usually a momentous event for parents, but ask any adult if they remember getting their first tooth and the answer will be no. But ask most people if they remember losing their first tooth – or any tooth after – and the answer will probably be yes! We have memories of wiggling the tooth over and over in hopes of it finally popping out, or sucking it in and out to make it wiggle funny while grossing out our big sister or our mom. When it finally did come out, we’d spend hours using our tongue to explore the now-empty spot where our tooth was, and sometimes feel the first evidence of a new tooth. Many elementary teachers are privy to the excitement of a youngster showing off his or her ‘lost’ tooth before it’s sometimes turned over to the Tooth Fairy. Teeth are interesting things, especially when their new to you as a child!

Going to the dentist can be an interesting visit as well. With the latest technology, dentist offices have a variety of neat gadgets and gizmo’s to help clean, maintain and repair your teeth. Xray machines can take a single picture of a single tooth or do panoramic pictures of your entire mouth. And, with a click of a button, these pictures are available on a computer monitor for your dentist to review and share with you, the patient! Dentists can clean your teeth with a variety of tools to remove plaque and tartar buildup, they can repair a cracked or broken tooth or replace a crown or cap, they can even replace a missing tooth using an implant. Today’s dentists also can provide a picture-perfect bright, white smile using porcelain veneers or powerful tooth whitening techniques.

Regardless of the reason for your visit to the dentist, you’re sure to see them make use of their tools and machinery and wonder what each one is for. Sometimes your dentist will explain what he or she is doing before they get to work, other times those of us curious enough to ask will mumble through a prepped-for-exam mouth what exactly is that for?!

Sometimes your dentist will talk to you or their dental assistant about parts of your teeth. If you’ve ever wondered what they are talking about, here’s little bit of basic information about the basic anatomy of your teeth!

Teeth are made up of two main parts: the crown (the top) of the tooth and the roots (inside of the tooth). The outer layer of your tooth is made up of enamel. Enamel has no nerve endings or feeling! The next layer of your tooth is called dentine. Dentine is a hard substance that protects the nerves inside of your teeth. The pulp, the inside material, of your teeth is made up of nerves and blood vessels. The roots hold your tooth in place deep within your jaw bones.

Even the most minor damage to a tooth can lead to serious problems if not taken care of right away. A chipped or broken tooth needs to be examined by your dentist right away even if you aren’t in any sort of pain. Your teeth are precious and important for your overall health! Consider this when performing a daily oral health regimen: brush thoroughly at least twice a day, floss every day and see your dentist for routine check ups to keep your teeth at their healthy best!
