O.J. Simpson named suspect in robbery

Friday, September 14, 2007

Reports say that O.J. Simpson, a former American football player is a suspect in a robbery that took place on Thursday night at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Simpson was not immediately arrested and was later released. He was not a guest at the hotel.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police (LVMPD) began to question Simpson and at least five other people, after they were accused of breaking into a room in the hotel, with at least one of the individuals holding a gun, but its not known if the room was a guest room.

Several sports memorabilia items, all previously belonging to Simpson, were reported to be stolen from the room, which was registered to sports memorabilia collector Alfred Beardsley, and reports say that when police found the items, Simpson claimed that they belonged to him. Among the items stolen is believed to be a suit that Simpson wore during his 1995 murder trial, an autographed item that had been signed by Joe Montana, and “never before released” version of Simpson’s book If I Did It. Simpson was found not guilty of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

“When they talked to him, Simpson made the comment that he believed the memorabilia was his. We’re getting conflicting stories from the two sides,” said Jose Montoya, a spokesman for the LVMPD.

Reports say that Beardsley was going to sell the items and made plans to meet with someone on Thursday night who was interested in purchasing them. The unnamed individual, along with OJ claimed to be police officers and ordered Beardsley to turn over his cellular phone, which he refused. He then claims one of the men “roughed him up” before stealing every collectible in the room.

Police are expected to release a statement to the media later today.

The Best Way To Clean A Clogged Drain

The Best Way To Clean A Clogged Drain

By Vincent Platania

Clogs happen. Kids pour things down the drain they shouldnt. Sludge builds up and slows the water. Your toothbrush slips down the drain. Hair, grease and random objects can turn your free-flowing drains into closed doors that dont let anything through. If it happens to you, knowing the right way to clean your clogged drain can save you a call to the plumber. Heres how to clear any drain in the house in a few simple steps.

The Tools You Need

You dont need to spend a fortune on tools to unclog your drains. Theyll cost less than $20 apiece at any household or hardware store. Heres the Official Drain-Cleaning Toolbox List:

– A plunger, also known as the plumbers friend. It will cost you $5 to $10. Its your first line of attack against nasty clogs.

– A plumbers snake or cable auger is a flexible steel cable that you can use to dislodge clogs that are down lower in the drain.

– For tougher clogs, or toilet clogs, a closet auger is the tool that you want. Its specially designed to get around the bend in the bottom of your toilet bowl.

– A drain cleaner for maintenance

– A bucket

How to Use a Plunger]

Okay. Most people have the wrong idea about what a plunger is supposed to do. Its not meant to shove the clog further down the drain. Its meant to PULL it out, or at the very least dislodge it so that it can go down the drain the right way. Heres the right way to use a plunger.

1. Stuff any holes. If its a toilet clog, you can skip this step. In a bathroom sink, cover the drainage holes in the bowl of the sink. In a double kitchen sink, stuff a rag into the unclogged drain. If its a modern tub, the drainage holes may be along the bottom edge of the drain lever. If you dont block the holes, you wont be able to get any suction going.

2. Place the cup of the plunger over the drain completely.

3. Heres the part where most people get the wrong motion going. Youre not trying to shove something down the drain. What you want to do is create suction that will dislodge the clog. Push down firmly on the plunger until the cup is pressed against the drain. Now, BOUNCE the plunger vigorously without pulling it off the drain. Youll hear water sloshing as the suction tugs on it. Bounce for several seconds youll feel the suction grabbing at the plunger.

4. Now yank the plunger straight up hard and fast. Nine times out of ten, youll hear the beautiful slosh and gurgle of water rushing down the drain.

5. If you dont, start over with Step 1.

Two or three times should do it. If it doesnt, proceed to

Cleaning Out the Drain

The idea behind using an auger is to hook the clog and pull it out. To do that, follow these steps.

1. In a sink, youll need to get UNDER it. Place the bucket under the elbow pipe and use a wrench to unscrew it and pull it off. This will let the water in the trap drain out.

2. Feed cable from the auger into the pipe until you feel resistance.

3. Pull out about 18 inches of cable, and crank the handle while pushing forward to feed more into the drain.

4. If you hit resistance, turn the handle counter-clockwise to pull the clog back out of the drain.

5. Alternate feeding the cable in and out until the cable moves freely.

6. Pull the cable out, replace the trap and the pipe and run hot water through the drain.

7. You may need to plunge the drain once or twice to clear debris from the busted up clog.

Preventing Clogs From Happening

A little maintenance each week will save you all the hassle of having to unclog your drains. As you use your sink and tub and washer and toilet, debris and soap scum and other less savory things cling to the sides of the pipes and form a buildup. The buildup narrows your drains, making them drain more slowly, and making it more likely that clogs will happen. To prevent clogs:

1. Use a screen or guard over your drains to prevent things from dropping into them.

2. Use a drain cleaner on a regular basis. The best drain cleaner to use is one that is kind to both the environment and your pipes. Whether you buy a drain cleaning product or make your own drain cleaner recipe, you should use it at least once a month to keep the sludge from building up around the inside of your pipes and blocking the drains.

Those two steps will save you from nearly all clogs. And if they do happen well, now you know what to do!

US House of Representatives rejects bail out bill in vote

Monday, September 29, 2008

The US House of Representatives rejected a bill on the USD 700 billion bail out of US banks. The voting on the bill has completed.

If passed, the bailout plan would have allowed for the United States government to purchase devalued mortgage backed securities, resulting from the subprime mortgage crisis from troubled financial institutions. The US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has said that the plan could cost up to $700 billion.

There has been considerable debate over several parts of the plan, which failed with 228 votes opposing, 205 supporting, and 1 not voting. The bill had much more support by the Democratic Party (with 60% of Democrats voting “aye”) than the Republican Party (of which only 33% voted for the bill).

George W. Bush described the bill before the vote was made. “This legislation deals with complex issues, and negotiators were asked to address them in a very short period of time. I appreciate the leadership of members on both sides of the aisle, who came together when our nation was counting on them. Negotiations are sometimes difficult, but their hard work and cooperation paid off,” he said, in a speech in which Bush begged politicians to support the bill.

Bush continued describing the bill. “The bipartisan economic rescue plan addresses the root cause of the financial crisis — the assets related to home mortgages that have lost value during the housing decline. Under the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, the federal government will be authorized to purchase these assets from banks and other financial institutions, which will help free them to resume lending to businesses and consumers.”

According to BBC News, congressmen opposed the bill after receiving 50 times as many letters against the bill as for the bill. George Bush attempted to respond to the criticisms of the bill by US citizens. “I know many Americans are worried about the cost of the bill, and I understand their concern. This bill commits up to 700 billion taxpayer dollars, because a large amount of money is necessary to have an impact on our financial system. However, both the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office and the Office of Management and Budget expect that the ultimate cost to the taxpayer will be far less than that”.

Choosing A Used Car

Choosing A Used Car

Choosing A Used Car

by

carolyn

Whether you choose to buy your used car from a private seller or a car dealership there are a number of considerations you should take into account.

— Budget Make sure you know how much money you have to spend, this will give you a price range from which to shortlist your choices. Take into account the cost of running the car, taxing, MOT and insurance costs as well, these can all quickly eat into your budget. There may also be some unforeseen mechanical problems that need fixing and you could find yourself spending extra money you had not accounted for. — Research Look into the value of the cars; the seller’s asking price might not necessarily be the actual value of the vehicle. People sometimes over estimate the actual worth of their car and forget that their values depreciate quickly. A publication like Parkers Guide Book or a simple check on an online auction site like Ebay will give you an idea of current market values. — Check Always check the documentation before buying. Ask to see the V5 registration papers; also known as the log-book, check to see if there is a valid MOT certificate and how much road tax is any is still left. — Drive Always take the vehicle out for a test drive to see how it handles and listen out for any strange noises. Also give it a good look over in good daylight conditions to see what shape it’s in. — Negotiate Never worry about haggling over the price, most sellers will expect this and will have accounted for it in their asking price so never accept the first price. Not negotiating may leave you paying more than necessary for the car. Buying from dealers Using a dealership when looking out for a used car can also be a good idea, reliable providers can give you added security and piece of mind, as well as having a lot of knowledge and many more cars to choose from. — Law When buying from a dealer you will have more legal protection than with a private sale. Warranties to guarantee the car for a particular time and regulations concerning financing are covered by the Consumer Credit Act. — Timing Pick the right time of the month, when sales staff are looking to hit targets and make commission. This is when you will find them more willing to negotiate and give you a better deal than you would normally have got. — Registered Look out for a trustworthy dealer; normally the more reliable dealers will be members of an official trade organisation. Don’t feel pressured into buying a car, at any time you can walk away from the deal, better to leave a car than feel obliged in buying something you will regret in a week or two. There are many people out there who have brought something they were not totally satisfied with and immediately been sorry.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Protesters turn their backs on Australian PM

Friday, May 25, 2007

Protesters in the Central Western New South Wales city of Bathurst gave Australian Prime Minister John Howard a cold reception as he arrived for a Liberal Party luncheon in the city.

Around 200 unionists and university students gathered to protest the Howard government’s new industrial relations regime called Workchoices, the lack of funding for higher education and the introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism.

Protesters claimed that the Howard government had ignored rural and regional Australia. Daniel Walton, the community campaign co-ordinator for Macquarie Your Rights at Work told Wikinews that Mr Howard was only interested in Bathurst after it had been moved to a marginal seat.

“In the 11 years Howard has been Prime Minister not once has he visited Bathurst”, he said.

“Now Bathurst is in the seat of Macquarie, which is seen as a marginal electorate, Mr Howard is suddenly interested in the city”.

The strongly blue-collar cities of Bathurst and Lithgow were relocated to the Macquarie electorate, previously considered a safe Liberal seat after an electorate redistribution.

Mr Howard was in Bathurst campaigning for the re-election of Kerry Bartlett and was a special guest at an invite-only Liberal Party fundraiser costing AUD$95 per person. The luncheon was attended by 400 members of Bathurst’s business community.

Unionists responded by offering a $0.95 “worker’s lunch” across the street.

Before the luncheon, Mr Howard held a community morning tea at the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit, promising funding of $10 million to investigate planning, engineering and environmental issues surrounding the construction of an expressway over the Blue Mountains following the Bells Line of Road route. Mr Howard said this funding was contingent upon the NSW government matching the federal government’s contribution and would be available under Auslink II from 2009.

Prior to the Prime Minister’s arrival at the luncheon, protesters called those attending the luncheon “Chumps”, booing at and calling MP Kerry Bartlett a “loser” when he walked outside. Unionists also chanted slogans such as “Workers united, we’ll never be defeated” and “Johnie Howard is a twerp, he wants to take our rights at work”.

As Howard arrived at the luncheon, protesters held up their placards and turned their backs on Mr Howard, claiming to be doing the same as his government had done to ordinary workers.

Michael Foggarty from the Public Service Association said while big business could afford luxuries such as a $95 lunch, workers were struggling.

“They might be able to afford $95 for lunch, but when you have workers on as low as $13 an hour that is a lot of money, ordinary workers are struggling under Workchoices”, he told Wikinews.

Mr Foggarty added that rising interest rates and petrol prices were having an impact on working families.

Giving a speech at the luncheon, Mr Howard said those wishing to dismantle the government’s industrial relations reforms were rolling back a “major economic reform”. Mr Howard said both Workchoices and the removal of unfair dismissal laws had reduced unemployment and generated prosperity.
