School on Australia’s Sunshine Coast makes staff redundant, requests they apply for ‘new’ jobs

This article’s primary contributor, Patrick Gillett, is an alumnus of Sunshine Coast Grammar School.

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Wikinews has obtained a list of middle management teaching staff allegedly made redundant, or laid off due to restructuring, by Sunshine Coast Grammar School (SCGS), in Queensland, Australia. Sources say that those staff have been told that they can apply for new positions that have opened up.

The list, published on the SCGS alumni Facebook page, contains the names of twenty-two staff members, eight of which taught this article’s primary contributor. Seventeen positions are reportedly being opened up by the private Christian school, eight of which seem to significantly overlap the old ones.

The changes are, apparently, designed to get teachers back into the classroom. “We are not cutting subject choices and extracurricular activities, but retaining a student-driven curriculum that integrates with the new Australian Curriculum, in keeping with our commitment to teaching and learning opportunities,” said headmaster Nigel Fairbairn.

Fairbairn could not guarantee that any of the staff would be given a position in 2011. “That will depend on how many people on that list apply for new positions of responsibility and are successful,” he said.

“The Head of the School cannot guarantee the 21 staff a job at the School in the future, with many of the positions being advertised to external applicants,” said Terry Burke, secretary for the Independent Education Union of Australia Queensland branch (Queensland Independent Education Union, QIEU).

“There has been little or no consultation with affected staff, who should not have to reapply for their jobs,” he said. “Most of the proposed restructuring is highly questionable and places at risk the high quality education at the School.”

Some former students responded angrily to the news.

Four of the affected teachers “were the backbone of the school when [controversy surrounded founding headmaster John Burgess] happened,” a former prefect (student leader) said. “They got it through that crisis and this is the thanks they get.”

“People are angry and shocked,” they continued. “I am aware of at least 10 families who have said they will pull their children out of the school – it’s that bad.”

The student body has not ruled out protesting the schools plans. “It’s getting to that stage,” the former prefect said. “People are trying to look at it in an intelligent way but there is so much anger out there.”

Wikinews understands that Fairbairn attracted criticism when he was a head teacher in Christchurch, New Zealand, where a former student claimed that Fairbairn “replaced the open and welcoming culture … with the tyrannical and oppressive one.”

The Dangers Of Stress And How To Reduce It

The Dangers Of Stress And How To Reduce It

By Cole Carson

It’s no secret that we live in a world where it’s easy to become bogged down by stress. Our responsibilities keep stacking up on top of us, and it feels like if we make a single, tiny misstep it’s all going to come crashing down on top of us. Unfortunately, not only does this stress interfere with our happiness, it also takes a toll on our bodies – if left unchecked, stress can cause damage to almost every major part of the body, most notably our hearts and immune system, as well as causing depression. So how do we fight stress?

Stress is actually the releasing of certain hormones into the bloodstream by the brain. It’s a natural act, designed to help our bodies work over-time to escape a dangerous situation. Our hearts beat faster and harder, our hearing increases, our lungs take in more oxygen – nearly every major system in the body is taxed to help us escape from harm. Although this is natural, prolonged stress is not, and can be extremely damaging to the body.

A good way to protect yourself is to make sure that you get the occasional break, but the key to avoiding the dangers of stress comes from your ability to mentally leave behind a stressful situation once you no longer have control of it. Most of us face small situations of stress everyday, whether it be a traffic jam, a crying baby, or having to put up with an irritating history professor. These situations are unavoidable, and the only way to protect yourself is to not let them get to you. You need to take mental control of the situation. Remind yourself that this is only a minor problem, and that it isn’t serious. Think of other similar situations that actually ended up as a funny story. The bottom line is that the first step to preventing stress damage is to remain calm and relatively unaffected by the small quirks in life that we just don’t have any control of.

Obviously, all of our problems aren’t small matters. We also have larger, more significant issues to deal with, and these can be much more difficult to escape. It could be that you have to work two jobs to pay the bills, or you are worried about your health or the health of a loved one, or perhaps you can’t seem to find the right job for you. These are things that cannot be ignored. The way to handle them is to first make sure that you have done everything you can to take care of your situation. Once you have done that, you have to realize that there is nothing else for you to do, and any time spent lingering on it will only be destructive. It can be difficult, but it is something you must take control of. If you don’t, not only will you be more miserable, but you won’t be able to deal with the problem as effectively. Walk away from them – put them out of your mind, and focus on other, happier things.

Lastly, one great way to get rid of stress in your life is to keep yourself occupied with things that you enjoy. It can be difficult to shove aside your problems if you’re bored, but if you’re having fun, it isn’t that difficult now, is it? Identify the little things that bring pleasure into your life. Maybe it’s fishing, or building model cars, or playing sports, and helping your kids with their schoolwork. Whatever it is, try to schedule in more of it. Don’t forget to keep it simple as well – you don’t want to stress yourself out trying to plan for a time that will help you release your stress!

There is no way to escape stress, but fortunately, we don’t have to. Stress itself is natural, but living in stress is not, and it isn’t something anyone has to do. If left unchecked, stress will wear away at you physically and make you ill equipped to handle your responsibilities, so slow down, take a fresh view of the world, and unwind.

Bush EPA nominee abandons insecticide-on-children study after Senate hearing

Saturday, April 9, 2005

Following a Senate hearing in which the Bush administration’s nominee for EPA administrator, Stephen Johnson, stoutly defended his plan to pay parents to document the effects on infants of insecticide use in the home, he reversed course and stopped the program.

Among the original requirements for the 60 families requested to be participants in the “Children’s Health Environmental Exposure Research Study” (CHEERS) study according to EPA were that they must:

 • Live in Duval County, Florida
 • Be a parent of a child under the age of 13 months
 • Spray or apply or have pesticides sprayed or applied inside your home on a routine basis (You do not need to change your regular household routine for the study.)

This original version of the requirements can be viewed in the Internet Archive, a free online repository that creates copies of websites on a regular basis. The third requirement was reworded by November 2004, according to the Internet Archive: “Maintain your normal pesticide or non-pesticide use patterns for your household. We will not ask any parent to apply pesticides in their home to be a part of this study.”

According to the above document, the area of Jacksonville/Duval County was chosen for reasons of existing year-round high usage of pesticides and other household chemicals within the home, as well as relevant data from existing prior studies. The study involved researchers visiting the home of participants, parents videotaping their children’s activities with a supplied camcorder, children wearing a small “activity sensor”, and parents collecting food and urine samples for detailed analysis of the effects of chemical exposure to common commercially available chemicals, primarily pesticides, on which “current information… is very limited” [1].

Selection for the study began in fall 2004. As incentives for their participation in the planned two-year study, parents were to be given $970, a t-shirt, and other gifts, and would have kept the video camera at its conclusion.

Complaining that the study was necessary, Johnson yielded to two Democratic Senators who had threatened to block him, using all means available, from officially taking the helm of the Environmental Protection Agency, of which he is the acting head. The block on his nomination was lifted afterwards although some Democratic Senators would not say how they would vote on the final nomination.

Under his guidance, the EPA agreed to accept $2 million for the controversial $9 million CHEERS study from an industry trade group, the American Chemistry Council, which represents the chemical insecticide manufacturers. The study was to be conducted with the cooperation of the Duval County Health Department, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based in Atlanta.

Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Bill Nelson, (D-FLA), demanded the cancellation of the study as proof of Johnson’s acknowledgement of what she called a “gross error in judgment”.

“The CHEERS program was a reprehensible idea that never should have made it out of the boardroom, and I am just happy that it was stopped before any children were put in harms way,” Boxer said. She added that testing on humans should not be a part of any United States environmental policy.

“I am very pleased that Mr. Johnson has recognized the gross error in judgment the EPA made when they concocted this immoral program to test pesticides on children,” Boxer said.

Work on the study was halted last November by Johnson while an independent review of the study’s design was conducted at his request. Part of the reason for the study’s current cancellation was what the EPA in its press release has termed “mischaracterization” of the nature of the study as though children were being deliberately sprayed with pesticides.

Johnson defended his approach, “I have concluded that the study cannot go forward, regardless of the outcome of the independent review. EPA must conduct quality, credible research in an atmosphere absent of gross misrepresentation and controversy. I am committed to ensuring that EPA’s research is based on sound science with the highest ethical standards.”

In November 2004, William Farland, an administrator with the EPA’s research department, told The Oregonian, “There’s no suggestion that we are asking them to use pesticides. We simply want them to continue to carry out their day-to-day activities.”

130 dead after torrential rains in India

Saturday, October 3, 2009

Officials in southern India have said that flash floods killed more than 130 people in the southern part of the country, following four days of heavy rain.

The Indian army dispatched troops and helicopters to the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh to rescue people stranded by the flooding. They also delivered emergency medical supplies and food provisions. Hundreds of thousands of people have already been evacuated out of the vicinity.

The rains damaged or destroyed thousands of homes, the authorities have said. The waters have also ruined crops, blocked roads, and disrupted communication links. The death toll is expected to rise as search teams reach areas previously rendered inaccessible.

The Chief Minister of Karnataka, B. S. Yeddyurappa, said that the current situation was “serious”. “We have asked for more helicopters from the Indian Air Force to help us,” he told media.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah said that army personnel had dispatched to assist with rescue efforts. “Six chopper [sic] have been pressed into service to immediately rescue people. While four helicopters are being used to airlift the flood-hit people in Kurnool district, two choppers were deployed in Mahabubnagar district. A helicopter rescued 15 people in the pilgrim town of Mantralayam,” he said.

Weather analysts have said that the intense rains come from a storm in the Bay of Bengal. “India’s monsoon season usually brings rains from June and withdraws by the end of September. But, this year some parts of the country were actually drought affected due to inadequate and untimely rainfall. Moreover, the cyclone in the Bay of Bengal did the damage in south India which is battling floods after rivers breached their banks. This is a calamity. The central government is also closely monitoring the situation,” said Professor D.K. George, a weather specialist.

The Indian Meterological Department has said it expects more heavy rains over the next day in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Game Testing Careers How To Start A Great Career Testing Video Games}

Game Testing Careers How To Start A Great Career Testing Video Games}

Submitted by: Jonathon Halston

There are a number of ways that someone can start down the path of a game testing career. In fact, many people are already starting down that path, trying to learn what they can do to become a video game tester and then move on to even better careers in the industry. Here are four of the bigger career paths available to anyone who wants to start a game testing career in the video game industry and then take it to a higher level.

Programmer

Programmers will need to have degrees in computer science or mathematics and a profound knowledge of languages like C++, Java and XNA. However, for many game dev testers, just working on games will give them many of these skills. A little extra college and some hard work in your job can quickly set you up for a position much higher in the hierarchy that will allow you to become a programmer in a few short years. Many programmers got their start as game testers, so if you are ambitious and driven to learn and succeed, and want to build and design games, not simply test them, then this is a career path to give serious consideration to.

Game Designer

Designers are the men and women behind the ideas that games are built on. They develop the systems, the story, and the basic art style before anyone starts creating the game. They will also consult on the game throughout its development cycle so that the programmers, artists, and writers can have a set point to refer back to. They will determine overall gameplay and strategy, character balance, plot development and the overall physics and rendering styles of the world within the game. For those who have ever dreamed of a great idea for a video game, this is the career path for you.

Game Artist

The artists will work to illustrate and animate the imagery from the game with their own specific style set. Those interested in becoming artists will need degrees in illustration and 3d animation from an accredited art school, but being a game dev tester can definitely help in getting started in the industry. There are many game artist programs available now online, and the career options for those acquiring these skill sets are extremely in demand and will only grow higher. If drawing is your thing, or you would like to combine a passion for art with a passion for games, consider becoming a game artist after starting your game testing career.

Game Producer

The producers are responsible for running the whole ship, telling men and women in every role how to get their jobs done. For a producer, the main skill that needs to be displayed is a knowledge of programming and organization – two things a tester has in spades.

For anyone interested in the gaming industry, the four careers above are things that you can very much be hopefully about getting involved with some day. While it might seem like a stretch that someone starting a game testing career as a video game tester can someday become a game producer, the truth is that there are always people out there who are working their way up the ladder – why not you too?

About the Author: Jonathon Halston has tested video games for over 11 years. He started out as a contract video game tester, and soon became a Software Design Engineer in Test at a World Class Software Company and you can too. For additional information on how to start a career

Ontario Votes 2007: Interview with Family Coalition Party candidate Mark Morin, Chatham—Kent—Essex

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Mark Morin is running for the Family Coalition Party in the Ontario provincial election, in the Chatham—Kent—Essex riding. Wikinews’ Nick Moreau interviewed him regarding his values, his experience, and his campaign.

He did not reply to the questions “Which of your competitors do you expect to pose the biggest challenge to your candidacy? Why?” and “Of the decisions made by Ontario’s 38th Legislative Assembly, which was the most beneficial to your this electoral district? To the province as a whole? Which was least beneficial, or even harmful, to your this riding? To the province as a whole?” Some spelling corrections have been made.

Stay tuned for further interviews; every candidate from every party is eligible, and will be contacted. Expect interviews from Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, New Democratic Party members, Ontario Greens, as well as members from the Family Coalition, Freedom, Communist, Libertarian, and Confederation of Regions parties, as well as independents.

Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out

Monday, February 12, 2007

Cars drove home the big prize last night, from the 34th Annual Annie Awards. The animation industry’s highest honor, ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annies recognise contributions to animation, writing, directing, storyboarding, voice acting, composing, and much more.

As mentioned, Pixar took home the big prize last night, after facing stiff competition from four other Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.

But the biggest winner of the night didn’t get a “Best Animated Feature” nod at all. Flushed Away won five feature animation categories including Animated Effects (Scott Cegielski), Character Animation (Gabe Hordos), Production Design (Pierre-Olivier Vincent), Voice Acting (Sir Ian McKellan as Toad), Writing (Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan, and Will Davies).

Over The Hedge won awards for Directing (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Storyboarding (Gary Graham), and Character Design (Nicolas Marlet).

Of little surprise, Randy Newman won an Annie for Cars in the “Music in an Animated Feature Production” category. Newman has won many Oscars for his movie music, and has a nomination this year for the song “Our Town”. Newman didn’t attend the Annies, instead picking up a Grammy for “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”.

DisneyToon Studios’ Bambi II won “Best Home Entertainment Production”, while “Best Animated Short Subject” went to Blue Sky Studios’ No Time For Nuts, which is based on Ice Age.

“Best Animated Video Game” went to Flushed Away The Game, while a United Airlines ad named “Dragon” won a “Best Animated Television Commercial” Annie for DUCK Studios.

Diet For Sciatica In Ayurveda

Diet For Sciatica In Ayurveda

What is Sciatica?

Sciaticais a common type of pain affecting the sciatic nerve extending from the lower back through hips, buttocks and down each leg. It typically affects only one leg at a time. It occurs commonly when there is any herniated vertebral disc, any bone spur on the vertebral column or there is the narrowing of the spine.

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is pinched usually by the herniated disc or bone spur on the vertebral column. In rare cases, it is seen that the nerve is compressed because of tumors or in diseases like diabetes it is seen more commonly.

There are certain risk factors for sciatica as follows-

 • Age – Age-related issues as a herniated spine or bone spur are the most common causes.
 • Obesity –Excess body weight can contribute to the stress on the spine which can trigger sciatica.
 • Diabetes – in this condition due to nerve damage changes seen commonly, sciatica is seen more frequently.
 • Occupation – Occupations which include carrying heavy loads drive a vehicle for a longer period are seen to have chances of getting sciatic pain.
 • Prolonged sitting – People who have a sedentary lifestyle or who sit for a longer period are commonly seen affected by sciatica.
 • Muscle spasms in the back.
 • Pregnancy
 • Spondylolisthesis.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Common symptoms of sciatica include –

 • Lower back pain
 • Hip pain
 • Constant pain on one side of the leg.
 • Pain is unbearable making one difficult to stand.
 • Tingling pain down the leg.

The Hallmark sign of Sciatica is the pain radiates from your lower spine to your buttock and down the leg. There is discomfort along the nerve pathway.

This pain can vary from a sharp cutting pain to mild pain. It also feels like an electric shock sometimes. Sitting for a prolonged period can aggravate the symptom.

Some of the people have numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg.

Diagnosis for Sciatica

Personal checkups during the routine examination may reveal the condition. There are few imaging tests to confirm the diagnosis as –

 • Xray – Xray of the spine is can reveal the bone spur.
 • MRI – MRI spine helps to find out the details images of the spine and soft tissues surrounding helping to diagnose the case.
 • CT Scan – it is used to do diagnose the case finally.
 • EMG (Electromyography) – this test measures the electric impulse produced by nerves and the responses of your muscles.

Conventional Treatment of Sciatica

There are various conventional methods for the treatment of sciatica like as –

 • Physiotherapy – it includes exercises to correct the posture, strengthen the muscles supporting the back improving the flexibility.
 • Medications – The types of drugs in sciatica are anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxants, narcotics, etc.
 • Steroidal Injection is also suggested in some cases where the nerve root is also involved.
 • Surgery – it is the option usually reserved for patients when the compressed nerve causes prominent symptoms like loss of bowel or bladder control, or the pain do not subside though taking pain killers. Surgery can remove those bone spurs or the portion of the herniated disk that is pressurizing on the nerve.

Homeopathic remedies for Sciatica

Homeopathy does not treat a symptom but considers the unique set of symptoms as a whole to address the root cause of the problem. The Homeopathic remedies for sciatica are believed to enhance the structure and functions of the nerves. Homeopathic remedies for Sciatica are –

 • Hypericum –Studies suggest that this homeopathic remedy may reduce spasms in the lower lumbar region. [Source:]
 • Aconitum Napellus – Studies suggest that this homeopathic remedy may possess anti-inflammatory properties. [Source:]
 • Colocynthis – Studies suggest that this Homeopathic remedy may relieve the pain caused due to pressure on the nerve ending. [Source:]

Preventive measure for sciatica

Some types of Sciatica like associated with pregnancy, degenerative disk disease, cannot be prevented. In some cases, it is possible to prevent to an extent by taking certain measures like

 • Maintaining good posture.
 • Quitting smoking.
 • Maintaining a healthy body weight.
 • Regular exercises like yogasanas, breathing exercises.
 • Keeping safe from fall.

Ayurvedic Diet Suggested

Recommended foods are –

 • Brown rice, whole wheat, green gram (moong), horse gram(kulatha), sesame(til), Louki(white guard), ginger, garlic, milk, and dairy products.
 • An adequate amount of potassium is also essential for managing Sciatica as it provides toughness to the muscles and helps in neuro-transmission. Potassium-rich foods are green leafy vegetables, avocados, white beans, potatoes, mushrooms, banana, Salmon fish.
 • Chicken, meat, and eggs should be consumed moderately as they cause constipation.

Foods to be avoided are –

 • Green peas, karela(bitter gourd), Frozen meat, fermented foods, cold drinks, cold water too.

Ayurvedic dietary tips

 • Take 5-6 pieces each of garlic and clove in a 10 ml sesame oil, heat on low flame for 5 minutes, allow to cool a bit and then apply it on your back with a gentle massage every day at bedtime. This remedy offers excellent relief from back pain, stiffness, and lumbago.
 • Freshly prepared ginger and lemon juice with black salt is good to relieve backache.

Home care for Sciatica

Self-care at home is necessary to manage the pain factor in sciatica. Stretching or activities that place additional strain on the back must be avoided.

Sleeping one-sided with a pillow taking in between the knees is seen as comfortable in many cases.

Heat and ice therapy alternating can provide instant relief of sciatic nerve pain. Ice pack helps to reduce the inflammation, while heat increases the blood flow to the painful areas giving some relief. Apply an ice pack to the painful area for 15 minutes once every hour and then apply heat for 15 minutes every 2 to 3 hours.

Proper body posture is found essential in helping to relieve the pain many times. Varying the posture after every 15 to 20 minutes is also beneficial.

MetLife to acquire Travelers Life and Annuity from Citigroup

Monday, January 31, 2005

Metlife announced on 01/31/05 that they were going to acquire Travelers Life and Annuity from Citigroup. Travelers Life and Annuity is an insurance underwriter. MetLife is a large life insurance and annuities underwriter. MetLife will have to borrow a lot of money to pay for the company, so rating agencies like S&P warn that the AA credit rating of MetLife might be lowered. This would cause the interest rates at which all of MetLife’s debt must be repaid to increase.

Citigroup committed to continue distributing Travelers life insurance and annuities through its Smith Barney stock brokers, Primerica agents, and Citibank branches.

Citigroup was previously known as Travelers Insurance before it bought Citicorp. First the Property and Casualty business of Travelers was spun off, and now the life insurance division has been sold off. This is primarily because insurance underwriters get a lower price to earnings multiple from the stock market because of the cycles and uncertainty associated with the insurance business. Also, having an insurance underwriter and a bank together does not usually create “cross-sell” opportunities, because consumers and businesses almost always buy life insurance and annuities through brokers who have a duty to give them other options. Citigroup will continue to sell insurance through its brokers as before.

Bbq Safety}

Bbq Safety}

Submitted by: Paula Gerie

Outdoor activities are always fun for social gatherings with friends and family and one great way to enjoy this time together is with a large BBQ on a warm summers night. However BBQ are known for posing risks which can, at times, be avoided by taking basic precautionary measures and not turning a blind eye to potentially dangerous situations. Mishandling of BBQs can have serious consequences which are best avoided. Never underestimate the danger that can come through striking the BBQ. It is all about common sense and preparing yourself for any situation which can occur when least expected.

We all want a safe experience when lighting the BBQ, so here are several tips which can turn a frightful experience in to a fun and enjoyable one. Many of us can find ourselves being easily distracted when handling the BBQ; after all how can we not be with when family and friends are present, we simply want to enjoy their company and there is no harm in that, obviously. Avoiding an injury and any damages simple precautions must be taken. Safety measures would naturally involve ensuring that your BBQ is in complete working order, always test this theory before your guests arrive, never assume that it will be ok for use, particularly if the BBQ has not been used for some time. Unfortunately a common mistake made by many is failing to ensure that the BBQ is furthest away from trees and wood as possible, for example the shed or childrens play houses; this can prove disastrous if not adhered to as such materials are set alight almost immediately if met with a live flame.

As we are all aware, children and pets are constantly active playing games and running around the garden; this is not a problem, but just keep them as far away from the BBQ and general cooking space as possible. Any toys and garden furniture such as hula hoops, footballs, and wooden chairs should also be kept well away from the BBQ and open flames. If in need of a break or for some reason the BBQ has to be left for a short period of time, always ensure another adult is present to take over; never under any circumstances it is wide to leave the BBQ unattended, this would be a careless act with disastrous results, particularly in the presence of children. In the event of an unexpected emergency, it is always wise to have a bucket of water, or even sand, present and ready to hand in order to act as quickly as possible to thwart potential blazes which can be caused by a live BBQ. A common mistake many people make is attempting to move the BBQ from one position to another; if the BBQ has been switched on and is in the process of heating up, or even cooking food, never attempt to move the BBQ; if this can be avoided, continue with the BBQ as is, however if for whatever reason the BBQ does need to be relocated, ensure it is completely turned off from the mains, wait for it to cool down as much as possible, protect with a weber BBQ cover for example, and then gently begin to move the heavy duty grill.

Another safety aspect overlooked by many is food safety; food poisoning can very easily be contracted from a BBQ due to undercooked meat and germs such as salmonella and E.coli being spread from raw meats on to food that is ready to be eaten. This can be largely avoided and germs can be killed by thoroughly cooking meat until it is piping hot. Weber BBQ U.K offers a wide range of Weber BBQ accessories which are a great aid to avoiding such disasters.
