Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Getting To The Gathering Of The Juggalos 2011

Getting To The Gathering Of The Juggalos 2011

Getting to the Gathering of the Juggalos 2011

by

Arielle C.

Hands down, one of the most unusual music festivals in 2011 is the Gathering of the Juggalos in Cave- in-Rock, Ill. While most other music festivals in 2011 incorporate the same old indie bands, for fans of Insane Clown Posse and related artists, the Gathering is Shangri-La on earth. For four days in Cave- in-Rock, Ill., the Gathering offers an unequaled experience.

Though, like many other music festivals in 2011, the focus is concerts, there’s so much more. The Gathering of the Juggalos, of course, brings some of the best horror rap and hardcore rock artists every year to Cave-in-Rock, Ill. But unlike most other music festivals in 2011, it also offers four days of other fun, crazy activities, like pro wrestling, comedy, contests, and more. How many other music festivals in 2011 can boast a wet T-shirt contest? Still, many large music festivals in 2011 are in or near large cities. Not so with the Gathering of the Juggalos — although this might be better, so juggalos can party in peace. But Cave-in-Rock, Ill. is relatively remote. If you are flying to Cave in Rock, Ill. for the Gathering, you have a few options: You can fly to Nashville, St. Louis, or Louisville (which are international airports, if you’re a juggalo coming from abroad), and then rent a car to drive the rest of the way to the Gathering. If you’re driving to Cave in Rock, Ill. from within the United States, you can search for directions online or using a GPS system by looking up this address: IL-1 & Lamb Rd, Cave In Rock Ill. 62919. Depending on from where you are driving to the Gathering, you may need to get across the Ohio River. Luckily there is a free ferry between highways IL-1 and KY-91 at Cave in Rock, Ill. It runs every day between 6 a.m. and 9:50 p.m. As far as accommodations, one of the best things about music festivals in 2011 is camping. That’s really the best way to experience the Gathering and meet new people. But if that’s one of the things that turns you off about music festivals in 2011, you can still get a close motel. There is one in Cave in Rock, Ill. itself, as well as several in nearby towns. The Gathering official website lists more at juggalogathering.com.

This year’s Gathering of the Juggalos takes place from August 11 – 14, which means there’s still plenty of time to get tickets and sort out your travel arrangements. One private company is even offering a “Juggalo Express” travel and ticket package. For more about the full lineup of performers, visit the official website of this

Controversy over effects of new bankruptcy law on victims of Katrina

Sunday, September 25, 2005

Hurricane Katrina has rekindled debate over the controversial Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, in the U.S. House of Represenatives. Congressional Democrats feel that among the hundreds of thousands of victims of Katrina, many of whom have lost all their possessions and are coping with relocation, those that declare bankruptcy should be granted the protections of the previous law. 32 Democrats have sponsored a proposal that would delay implementing certain parts of the law to “insure that we do not compound a natural disaster with a man made financial disaster.”

The new bankruptcy law affects anyone whose income (as of the six months before filing) was over the state median income. Democratic legislators point out that many hurricane victims who manage to find work will be suffering from wage reductions, making them unable to effectively deal with their previous debts. Among U.S. states, Louisana and Mississippi have the fourth and third lowest median incomes, respectively. Democrats also feel that it is unfair to require repayment by bankrupted Hurricane Katrina victims while citizens in other states with similar incomes would pay nothing.

F. James Sensenbrenner, Republican from Wisconsin and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has denied a hearing on creating an exception in the law for the purposes of Katrina relief. He noted that “If someone in Katrina is down and out, and has no possibility of being able to repay 40 percent or more of their debts, then the new bankruptcy law doesn’t apply.”

The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 has been heavily criticized by consumer rights’ organizations. The Consumer Federation of America argues that “[the] new requirements, coupled with strict deadlines for production upon the penalty of an automatic dismissal are difficult for the most organized person to meet, never mind someone who has had his or her home destroyed by Katrina.”

Opponents of the bill also argued that it makes the government “a bill collector for private companies”, and could lead to criminal prosecutions over matters best left in civil courts, and theoretically even to life imprisonment under federal three-strikes laws. Such opponents view the bulk of the act either as “bought and paid for” by the Credit Card Industry, who spent millions lobbying in support of the bill, or else as an unfortunate compromise between the lobbyists for banks and bankruptcy lawyers, such as the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI). Nathalie Martin, of ABI, said that “Many people will still qualify to file for Chapter 7,” which means liquidation of assets in exchange for cancellation of debt.

What Is The Difference Between An Absolute And A Limited Divorce?

What Is The Difference Between An Absolute And A Limited Divorce?

byAlma Abell

In the state of Maryland petitioners must review the different types of divorce before filing. In the state, there are two primary forms of divorce. They are absolute and limited divorce. While the proceedings are similar, the divorces are completely different.

What is an Absolute Divorce?

An absolute divorce is the dissolution of the marriage. In these proceedings, the couple determines what party acquires child custody and how their property is divided. With child custody, the parties have the option to choose sole or joint custody. With property division, all property that is owned jointly offers both parties with an interest. The court could rule that both parties can continue to use the property, or that it is necessary to sell it.

As the court assigns ownership of marital property, the current financial state of each party is evaluated. If a spouse cannot earn an income that allows them to maintain the same lifestyle as they had during the marriage, he or she may receive a higher award. However, under these circumstances, the court may also award alimony payments to assist them until they can complete a college program or find more suitable employment. To discuss an absolute divorce contact a Family Lawyer Timonium MD today.

Reviewing a Limited Divorce

A limited divorce is essentially a legal separation. The parties remain married and live separately. Couples who seek a limited divorce may not possess the ground required under Maryland law to acquire an absolute divorce. They could also face difficulties in their marriage in which they aren’t able to dissolve. During the limited divorce, the couple maintains the same rights as they would prior to these proceedings. This form of divorce helps them to determine if they want to end the marriage completely.

Couples facing difficulties that they can’t settle on their own should consider the benefits of both forms of divorce available in Maryland. They allow these couples to seek an amicable solution to their issues without further issues. To acquire information about these proceedings hire a Family Lawyer Timonium MD by contacting Maria Caruso or Click here for more information.

Judge orders residents and city to come to agreement on partially collapsed building in Buffalo, New York

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Buffalo, New York —Judge Justice Christopher Burns of the New York State Supreme Court has ordered a halt to an emergency demolition on a 19th century stable and livery on 428-430 Jersey Street in Buffalo, New York that partially collapsed on Wednesday June 11, initially causing at least 15 homes to be evacuated. At least two homes remain evacuated.

Burns orders that both the city and the group Save The Livery (www.savethelivery.com) have to come to an agreement on what to do with the building, and try to work out ways of saving at least some portions if it including the facade, side walls and a lift tower. Save The Livery is comprised of concerned area residents who have grown to love the building’s historic and unique character. On June 14, they won a temporary restraining order to stop demolition. The court ruled that the city was only allowed to remove material in immediate danger to residents and pedestrians, but stated that the demolition could only be performed with “hand tools.” The court also ordered that any rubble which had fallen into neighboring yards when the building collapsed, to be removed.

“It is in the interest of the city to have a safe environment–but also important to maintain a sense of historical preservation,” stated Burns in his ruling. Burns has given the sides until tomorrow (Friday June 20) to come to an agreement and has ordered both parties to return to court at 9:30 a.m. (eastern time) “sharp.” Activists of Save The Livery urge supporters of the stable to “fill the courtroom” to show “continued and ongoing support.” The hearing is scheduled to take place at 25 Delaware Avenue in the Supreme Court building, 3rd Floor, trial part 19.

Currently the building is owned by Bob Freudenheim who has several building violations against him because of the buildings poor condition. He has received at least five violations in three months and residents who live near the building state that Freudenheim should be “100% responsible” for his actions. Many are afraid that if the building is demolished, Freudenheim’s charges of neglect will be abolished.

On June 17, developer and CEO of Savarino Companies, Sam Savarino was at the site of the stable, discussing the building with residents and preservationists. In 2006, Savarino proposed and planned The Elmwood Village Hotel, a ‘botique’ hotel on the Southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues. The project was later withdrawn after residents filed a lawsuit against Savarino and the city. Wikinews extensively covered the story, and contacted Savarino for his professional opinion on the building.

“[I would] love to see it preserved. I was there to see if there was anything we could do to help, to see if anything can be salvaged. I just want to see the right thing happen, and so does the city,” stated Savarino to Wikinews who added that he was allowed inside the building for a brief period.

“The side walls are beyond repair. The roof has rotted and it could come down at any time,” added Savarino who also said that the building “below the second floor appears to be stable.” He also states that the back wall of the building, which borders several homes, appears to be intact.

“Eliminating the back wall could be a problem for the neighbors. It is not unreasonable to leave at least 12 feet” of the back wall standing, added Savarino.

Savarino did not say if he was interested in buying the property, but did state, “I am sure there are a couple of people interested” in buying the property. On Thursday, Buffalo News reported that a “businessman” might be interested in purchasing the property, though Wikinews is not able to independently confirm the report. Savarino says that with the property still slated for emergency demolition, a potential buyer could face tax fees of nearly US$300,000.

Freudenheim gave the city permission to demolish the building on Thursday June 12 during an emergency Preservation Board meeting, because he would not be “rehabilitating the building anytime soon.” Freudenheim, along with his wife Nina, were part-owners of the Hotel Lenox at 140 North Street in Buffalo and were advocates to stop the Elmwood Village Hotel. They also financially supported a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the hotel from being built. Though it is not known exactly how long Freudenheim has owned the stable, Wikinews has learned that he was the owner while fighting to stop the hotel from being built. Residents say that he has been the owner for at least 22 years.

The building was first owned by a company called White Bros. and was used as a stable for a farm which once covered the land around the building for several blocks. The Buffalo Fire Department believes the building was built around 1814, while the city property database states it was built in 1870. Servants and workers of the farm were housed inside resident quarters situated at the rear of the building on what is now Summer Street, but are now cottages where area residents currently reside. Some date as far back as 1829.

At about 1950, the stable was converted into an automobile body shop and gasoline station.A property record search showed that in 1950 at least four fuel storage tanks were installed on the property. Two are listed as 550 square feet while the other two are 2,000 square feet. All of the tanks are designated as a TK4, which New York State says is used for “below ground horizontal bulk fuel storage.” The cost of installing a tank of that nature according to the state, at that time, included the tank itself, “excavation and backfill,” but did not include “the piping, ballast, or hold-down slab orring.” It is not known if the tanks are still on the property, but residents are concerned the city was not taking the precautions to find out.

Why Should I Get A Business Gas Credit Card?

Why Should I Get A Business Gas Credit Card?

By Tom Tessin

If you own a business with a fleet of vehicles and youre still paying full price for gasoline, you should stop right where you are now and really consider a gas rebate credit card that is designed for business. Whether your business owns one car or a thousand, you can save gas either way, there are no set restrictions. If youre already familiar with the concept, I assure you after you read this report, youll want to apply for a gas credit card and start saving money for your business today.

Even if you dont own a business, there are credit cards out there that are designed for personal use. Everyone and their mother drive a vehicle in the United States. Everyone likes to save money and this is why this type of credit card is perfect for the everyday driver. Below are a few reasons why you should apply for a gasoline rebate credit card today for your business or personal use.

Save money

The whole idea of applying is to save money. Whenever you make a purchase, you never want to pay full price and with a gas credit card, it will be like youre getting g a sale every time you fill up a pump. The cards work in a very simple way. Every time you fill up at the pump, youre going to get a certain percentage off your final total. This percentage will vary from card carrier to card carrier but the industry average is anywhere from one percent to ten percent. This number, of course, can go up over time depending on the credit market.

Easy expense tracking

When you have a gasoline type credit card thats built for your business, you will be able to track every employees spending. If you really want to be smart, you can apply for a card thats designed solely for a gas station. Some of these credit cards only allow you to make purchases at the station itself. This means that if youre afraid of your employees buying things outside of the gas station, you wouldnt have to worry. The nice thing about getting a credit card for your business that relies around gasoline is that youre able to track your expenses a lot easier month to month. This means that every time your bill comes in, youll see exactly how much youve spent and who spent it.

More than just rewards

Some cards that are on the market allow you to save more than just on gas, they let you save in other areas such as groceries, auto repairs, and more. So, if you dont want to apply for a credit card just to save on gas, rest assured theres other cards on the market that focus around gas rebates and other sectors as well.

The three points should hopefully persuade you a little bit by now. If not, keep doing your research and ask other business owners if they own one and see what they think of it. Im sure youll hear good things and when you do, make sure you come back online, do your research, and apply for a card today.

She also rounds out the top positions within New Zealand being taken by women. All four of Governor-General, Prime Minister, Chief Justice and the Speaker of the House are female.
